S&T survives Tritons rally to win another five set thriller

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – For the second time in its last three matches Missouri S&T won the first two sets only to watch the opposition to win the next two to force a winner take-all fifth and in both cases S&T was able to win the finale to take the match. The Miners defeated Missouri-St. Louis 3-2 (25-18, 25-14, 21-25, 25-27, 15-13).

S&T (10-8, 6-3 GLVC) finished the match with 72 kills and had four players reach double figures led by Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) with 15. Holly Tarvin (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had 13 apiece while Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) finished with 12. Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and Shelby Wagner (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit) narrowly missed double digits with nine and 8 kills respectively. Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) was one of three players to finish the match with a double-double dishing out 38 assists while recording 11 digs. Wright added 10 digs while Tarvin finished with 11. Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) dug up 15 balls to lead the Miners.

The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .277 (72k/23e/177ta) and had 15 total team blocks. The one downside was S&T committed 13 service errors in the contest.

The Tritons (10-8, 5-4 GLVC) recorded 56 kills in the match and had an attack percentage of .148 (56k/32e/162ta). Chelsea Burkle led the way with 14 kills while Haley Brightwell added nine more. Lindsay Meyer dished out 44 assists and she shared the lead in digs along with Emily Bragaw with 15.

S&T trailed 8-4 in the final set before scoring four of the next five points to get within 9-8. UMSL extended its lead to 11-9, but the Miners came roaring back getting a kill from Moon and an attack error by Hannah Miller evened it at 11.

S&T gave the point right back though as Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) hit a serve into the net to make it 12-11. Haslag came right back with another kill to even things up again, but another service error gave the Tritons a 13-12 advantage.

In a match of runs the Miners had the final one scoring the last three points. Tarvin tied it with a kill, and then Haslag put S&T in front with a kill. Haslag and Plunk then combined for a block on Brightwell to end the match.

The Miners, winners of three straight, travels to Kirksville, Mo., next Friday night to take on 17th ranked Truman State at 7 p.m.
