Box Score QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T got a late goal from
Oscar Alvarez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Ciudad de Mexico) Sunday evening to pull out a 3-2 victory over Truman State on the second day of the Quincy Soccer Bowl.
Alvarez scored on a free kick from just outside of 30 yards away, hitting a low shot past Truman goalkeeper Nick Wallner to give S&T a victory in a game in which they let a 2-0 lead escape them in the final 20 minutes of regulation time before getting the lead back. The victory allowed the Miners to finish second in the two-day, four-team event after Quincy beat Lindenwood in double overtime in Sunday's second game.
S&T grabbed the lead just 69 seconds into the contest when
Diego Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) took a cross from
Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ) and volleyed a shot by Truman starting goalie Drew Garrone.
That lead held until early in the second half, when
Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) headed in a corner kick from Robayo to extend the lead to 2-0 at the 51:26 mark. From there, the Bulldogs began to pick things up on the offensive end and were able to draw to within a goal when Matt Langley scored by heading in Kyle Menges' free kick with just under 17 minutes left in regulation time.
A little over 11 minutes later, Truman was awarded a penalty kick, which Tony Luedecke converted to knot the score at two. But following a foul on the Bulldogs, Alvarez hammered in the game-winner as he put the shot to the left of Wallner.
Truman had two more scoring chances in the final two minutes, but one attempt was blocked and other shot in the final minute of play went wide of the net.
The Bulldogs outshot the Miners 10-5 in the contest, including by an 8-2 margin in the second half. S&T goalkeeper
Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) turned away four shots on goal to pick up the victory in the nets for the Miners.
The Miners, 1-0-1 after the opening weekend of play, will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday afternoon when they take on Wisconsin-Parkside in a 1:15 p.m. game in Kenosha, Wis.
