ABOUT THE MINERS: Missouri S&T's men's soccer team opened its Great Lakes Valley
Conference schedule on a down note over the weekend, dropping a pair of 2-1 decisions to
Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis on the road.
S&T held 1-0 leads in the second half of both contests, only to see their opponents rally for
victories in the second half. Wisconsin-Parkside scored the game-winner against the Miners with
7:28 to play in regulation time, then Lewis beat the Miners with two goals in a span of 54 seconds
midway through the second half.
Timmy Kenny (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) scored the Miner goal in both contests, scoring Friday
off an assist from
Adam Stensland (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill.) and Sunday when he converted a penalty
kick in the opening half. Kenny's two goals lead the Miners heading into play this week.
In goal, the Miners have split time between
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) (Iowa City, Iowa) and
Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) (St.
Charles, Mo./St. Charles West); Jackson leads the way with a 0.90 goals against average.
HEAD COACH JOE AHEARN: Joe Ahearn, in his sixth season at the helm of the Miners'
program, earned “Coach of the Year” honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2010
after leading the Miners to a share of the GLVC title and to its first NCAA Division II Tournament
appearance in 2010. Ahearn has led the Miners to a mark of 40-40-12 in his five-plus seasons,
including a 27-21-7 mark since the start of the 2009 season. Missouri S&T was been ranked in
the Top 25 by the NSCAA in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Ahearn became the Miners' head coach prior to the 2007 season after spending two seasons as
an assistant at Colgate University and three years on the staff at DePaul University, where he
played his collegiate soccer.
Prior to that, he worked as the equipment operations coordinator for the United States Soccer
Federation and traveled with the national team to the 2002 World Cup held in South Korea and
Japan. He also traveled with the team when it took part in the Under-20 World Championships in
Argentina.
Ahearn is a 2000 graduate of DePaul, where he played in 67 games over his four-year career for
the Blue Demons and started in every game in his last three years. He was selected to the
Conference USA all-league team as a third-team selection following the 1999 season and was
chosen as his team's most valuable player.
THE OPPONENTS:
SAINT JOSEPH'S: The Pumas (1-3, 0-2 GLVC), like the Miners, suffered a pair of losses in the
opening weekend of conference play as they fell to 15th-ranked Rockhurst and William Jewell at
home. After their 4-0 loss to Rockhurst, SJC dropped a 3-2 decision to William Jewell despite
getting goals from Torrey Brock and Cole Galloway, but a goal with under five minutes remaining
sent it to defeat.
Steve Quella and Rylan Gentil have split time in goal and have a combined goals against
average of 2.75 for the season. Two of the Pumas' three losses have come to teams ranked
among the top 15 nationally.
INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds posted a pair of shutouts last week, including a 2-0 win over
William Jewell to open GLVC play, but lost 3-2 Sunday to No. 15 Rockhurst to fall to 2-3 overall
and 1-1 in the GLVC. Reid Strain, who leads UIndy with five goals, had both tallies in the game
with Rockhurst that put his team in front before the Hawks rallied in the latter stages to win.
Goalkeeper Andrew Verhonik enters the week with a 1.80 goals against average and has played
every minute in goal to date for the Greyhounds.
