Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri-St. Louis snatched a victory away from Missouri S&T in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday, getting a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Taylor Holman to capture a 2-1 victory over the Miners at the UMSL Baseball Field.
With the win, UMSL gained the last available spot in the Great Lakes Valley Tournament field and sets up a rematch with the GLVC West champion Miners in the opening game of the tournament Thursday in Evansville, Ind. The Miners and Tritons will play at 11 a.m. at the University of Southern Indiana.
The Miners took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth after a brilliant pitching performance by starter
Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield), who allowed only three hits over the first eight innings.
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) entered the game and got the first two outs around a hit by Charlie Mohr.
With first base open, Dunsford walked John Pilackas, then Spencer Ammons reached on an infield single to load the bases. Holman followed with a hit into left center that scored Mohr and Pilackas to win the game for the Tritons.
The teams played scoreless baseball for seven innings as Pyles matched zeroes on the scoreboard with UMSL starter Chris True. S&T did not get more than one runner on base over the first seven innings, but was able to load the bases against True in the eighth.
Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) put runners on second and third. True intentionally walked
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) to load the bases and was pulled in favor of lefthander Tomas Duffek, who got
Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) to hit a ball to the shortstop and get a force out at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) followed with a sacrifice fly to put S&T on the board, but Voth-Gaeddert was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play to end the inning.
Pyles pitched around an error and a hit in the eighth to keep the Miners in front, but the Tritons were able to stage their game-winning rally an inning later.
The Tritons (29-20, 20-14 GLVC) outhit the Miners (31-13, 20-10) in the contest, which was a rescheduled game from a rainout in late April.
