Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A five-run third inning put Missouri S&T's baseball team into a hole it couldn't climb out of, as Missouri-St. Louis put its season to a close with an 8-1 victory Friday in an elimination game in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The Tritons, winners of 23 of their last 28 games, scored all five runs with two outs in the third. With runners on first and third, an error on John Pilackas' ground ball brought home the first run and kept the inning alive. Following the error, Spencer Ammons had a two-run single, Nolan Craig drove in a run with a double and Justin Lois completed the rally with an RBI single off S&T starter
Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla).
S&T missed a good scoring chance in the opening inning after back-to-back singles by
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) and
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) with one out. However,
Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) lined into a double play to end the inning and the Miners got just one runner on base over the next five innings.
The Miners got on the scoreboard in the seventh when Voth-Gaeddert doubled to start the inning, moved to third on a fly ball by Hall and scored on a wild pitch. But the Tritons got that run back in the eighth on a two-out RBI double by Craig, then added two more runs in the ninth to close out the win.
Bowe lasted into the fifth inning and allowed nine hits; all five runs he allowed were unearned. The Tritons (31-20) outhit the Miners 13-6, with Lockett and Voth-Gaeddert getting two hits apiece for the Miners, who finished the year with a school record number of wins in a 32-15 campaign.
