Miners rally for victory over Panthers, stay alive in GLVC Tourney

5/10/2012 9:52:00 PM

Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Missouri S&T rallied from an early deficit to keep its run in the Great Lakes Valley Tournament alive Thursday evening, taking a 9-5 decision from Drury behind a 14-hit attack and a complete game from senior lefthander Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell).

The win sends the Miners into an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, where they will play the loser of the 11 a.m. game between Northern Kentucky and Missouri-St. Louis – who beat S&T 5-1 in the opening game on Thursday – at the University of Southern Indiana.

The Panthers put three runs on the board against Gronek in the opening inning, but as he settled into the game – retiring 14 straight hitters in one stretch – the Miner offense came to life and scored in four straight innings to take the lead for good.

In the second, the Miners got a one-out double from Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) and a two-out double from Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) to get on the scoreboard, then scored again in the third when Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) doubled home Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland).

S&T took the lead in the fourth after taking advantage of a key Drury error in the inning.  After Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) singled with one out, Brown hit what looked to be a double play ball to short, but the throw to second went off the glove of second baseman Brett Neill and into right field.

With the runners at second and third, Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) singled through a drawn-in infield to score Morrison and Brown to put S&T into the lead.

The Miners staged another uprising in the fifth to knock out Panther starter Tyler Van Gerpen.  Lockett drew a walk with one out, then Voth-Gaeddert doubled down the line in left to score him.  Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) followed the double with a single up the middle to score Voth-Gaeddert and close the book on the Drury starter.

Gronek did not allow a baserunner from the first inning, when he gave up a two-run single to Alex Larkin, until the sixth when Neill singled with one out.  Neill came across the plate on another run-scoring hit by Larkin, but Gronek got out of the inning by getting John Neill to fly out with the bases loaded.

S&T added to its lead with two runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) and an RBI single by Lockett, then scored an unearned run in the ninth after Hall reached on an error and came home on a double by Morrison.

The Miners outhit Drury 14-10, as Rich had three hits and four others had two apiece.

Gronek – who threw a career-high 153 pitches -- improved his record to 12-1 on the season as he struck out seven, including the 200th of his Miner career when he fanned Nick Thimesch in the eighth inning.
