QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T's baseball team, ranked 13th in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association national poll, bounced back from its doubleheader loss Tuesday at Drury by sweeping Quincy University Friday afternoon, winning by scores of 8-1 and 9-7 at the QU Baseball Stadium.

The Miners broke open a close game in the late innings of game one, then had to bounce back after surrendering a four-run lead in the bottom of the sixth of the nightcap, as Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS)'s two-run double off QU closer Brian Thompson gave the Miners the lead in the seventh inning.

S&T led 7-3 with a man on and two outs in the sixth, but two straight hits, a hit batter and a walk drew the Hawks to within two.  Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) entered the game and got Curran Collins – the Hawks' top home run hitter – to pop a ball up behind second, but the ball was dropped in center and two runs scored to tie the game.

Quincy brought in Thompson in the tied game, but he allowed an infield single to Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) to start the inning.  Following a sacrifice bunt, an intentional walk and a wild pitch, Thompson retired Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) on a pop-up, but Voth-Gaeddert hit the first pitch into the left field corner for a ground rule double to score Coan and Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) to put S&T in front.

But in the bottom of the inning, the Hawks' first two hitters reached against S&T's closer, Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville), then a sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position.   However, Dunsford got Gavin Meyer on a pop fly and Drake Austin to ground to second to end the game in the Miners' favor.

The Miners scored twice in the opening inning, getting the first run on a hit by McCord, a passed ball and a throwing error as Lockett was sacrificing the runner to third.  Lockett scored later in the inning on Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS)'s sacrifice fly.

S&T added two more in the third on an RBI double by Voth-Gaeddert and a single that followed by Hall.  Quincy came right back and tallied three in the bottom of inning, two scoring on Aaron Priestes' two-run double.

In the fifth, the Miners pushed their advantage back to four with help from a pair of Quincy miscues in the field.  With one out, Hall and Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) got hits, then Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) hit a ball to third that was dropped by the second baseman and rolled away, allowing Hall to come around to score.

Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) followed with a squeeze bunt that went under the glove of the pitcher for another error as Caffrey scored, then Brown came around to score on a two-out hit by Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS).

Wobbe and Voth-Gaeddert each finished with three hits for the Miners, who outhit the Hawks 14-10 in the nightcap.  All three of Voth-Gaeddert's hits were doubles as he finished with three runs batted in as well.

Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest), who got the final out in the sixth, picked up the win in relief and Dunsford recorded his ninth save.

In game one, S&T took the lead in the second when Caffrey drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Brower.  Caffrey also scored the second run as well as he singled with two outs in the sixth and scored when Brown doubled down the line in right.

Priestes hit a home run off S&T starter Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) to open the sixth, but that was the only run the Hawks could manufacture off him and three relievers.  Robertson picked up his fifth win of the year by allowing only three hits and fanning six in seven-plus innings of work.

S&T added single runs in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Hall and in the eighth on an RBI hit by Brower, then tacked on four more in the ninth against five Hawk relievers.  Hall had an RBI hit in that inning as well and Caffrey delivered a two-run double.  Brown drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

The Miners outhit Quincy 14-3 in the opener, getting three hits from Brown and two apiece from Hall, Caffrey and Brower.

S&T, 21-6 overall and still in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division at 11-3, will face the Hawks in another twinbill Saturday beginning at noon.
