SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drury swept a doubleheader Tuesday evening from the 13
th-ranked Missouri S&T baseball team, taking the second game
4-3 after winning a
9-7 shootout in game one.
Alex Larkin scored the game-winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh of game two to win the game for the Panthers, after the Miners had tied the game in the top of the seventh.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard first in game two, as Nick Thimesch singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Brett Neill's single. S&T tied the game in the fourth when
Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage)'s two-out single.
The Miners took the lead in the fifth as
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) opened the inning with a hit and moved to second on a passed ball. Following a sacrifice bunt by
Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS),
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) singled past the third baseman to put S&T in front.
Drury answered right back with two in the bottom of the inning, aided by a pair of Miner errors. A dropped ball at second base on a bunt play allowed the Panthers to eventually load the bases, then a two-out hit by Thimesch scored the tying run; an error following the hit brought the go-ahead run in as well.
S&T had a scoring chance in the sixth when two runners reached base, but DU closer Laurent Zenoni retired Wobbe with two outs to escape that inning. However, the Miners tied the game in the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out and Caffrey singled past a diving Caleb Cole to score Lockett.
The Miners had a chance to take the lead, but missed a suicide squeeze that led to
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) being retired at the plate and were unable to score the go-ahead run in the inning.
Larkin drew a walk from S&T reliever
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) to open the seventh and was sacrificed to second, but Dunsford struck out Michael Bigonio for the second out. Thimesch followed with a ground ball that was thrown past the first baseman, which allowed Larkin to score the winning run.
The Miners outhit the Panthers 10-5 in the nightcap, getting two hits apiece from Caffrey, Lockett, McCord and
Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS). Dunsford, the fifth pitcher used by S&T in game two, took the loss.
In a wild opener, the Miners rallied from a 6-1 deficit to take the lead in the seventh inning, only to see the Panthers come right back and score three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and the game.
S&T scored in the second inning on
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South)'s RBI single to score Caffrey, who walked to start the inning and moved around on a single and a sacrifice bunt. However, the Panthers scored three in the bottom of inning after their first four batters got hits to start the inning, then tacked on three more in the fourth after the first four hitters reached base again.
The Miners started cutting into the margin in the sixth when McCord bunted his way on to open the frame and Lockett followed with a run-scoring double. Two batters later, Hall singled up the middle to drive in Lockett to make it 6-3.
Drury starter Tyler Van Gerpen had essentially cruised through the first five innings before running into the difficulties in the sixth, then walked the first two Miners in the seventh on eight pitches. Chris Barratt took over and gave up three straight hits, including a two-run single to Lockett and a game-tying RBI single to Voth-Gaeddert. S&T then grabbed the lead when Caffrey dumped a single into right with two outs.
But the Panthers again answered back, scoring three times on just one hit in the bottom of the seventh. The inning was aided by a catcher's interference call, then Drury tied the score on a bases loaded walk to Thimesch with two outs. Neill followed with a two-run single off
Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) to put the Panthers in front.
S&T got the tying run on base in the eighth and to the plate in the ninth, but Zenoni got his team out of the inning both times to preserve the win.
McCord had three hits for the Miners, while Lockett and Caffrey had two apiece for S&T, who matched the Panthers with 12 hits apiece.
Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) took the loss in relief for the Miners.
Missouri S&T will open a four-game series Friday at Quincy beginning with a noon doubleheader that day.
