ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T got back on the winning track Tuesday afternoon, using an early outburst to capture a 7-1 victory over Lincoln University at the S&T Baseball Field.
The Miners, who improved to 27-11 with the win, scored six times over the first two innings and let the pitching staff piecemeal the win from there, as S&T employed six pitchers in the mid-week non-conference affair.
S&T got on the board in the opening frame on
Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS)'s two-out, two-run single that scored
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) and
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS), then broke the game open an inning later by scoring four times including three after the second out was recorded.
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) led off the inning with a hit and stole second, then advanced to third on
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul)'s ground out and scored on
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South)'s ground out. Following Rich's ground ball,
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) was hit by a pitch, Wobbe singled and Voth-Gaeddert was able to extend his hitting streak to 13 games with a double to the fence in left that scored both runners.
Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) followed Voth-Gaeddert's hit with an RBI single of his own to give the Miners a six-run advantage.
Lincoln got its only run in the third on a two-out double off the bat of Chris Pfau, but it was also an inning that saw the Miners make two superb defensive plays as well. The first came from Rich, who dove to catch Colby Shepherd's line drive to start a double play, then S&T executed a perfect relay on Pfau's double to cut down Andrew St. Pierre at the plate to end the inning.
The Miners got their final run in the eighth on an RBI single by
Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview).
None of the six pitchers used by the Miners –
Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield),
Mike Bush (Wildwood, Mo./Eureka),
Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek),
Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest),
Josh Raburn (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) and
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) – pitched more than two innings in the contest. Pyles, the starter, got the win with three strikeouts and one hit allowed in his two innings of work. The six hurlers allowed just six hits on the day, four of which came from Pfau.
The Miners had 13 hits on their side, with Wobbe getting three and Caffrey and Brower two apiece.
S&T will open a key four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, who swept Quincy in a twinbill Tuesday to move into fourth place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division standings. The first game will begin at noon at the UMSL Baseball Field.
