LIBERTY, Mo. – William Jewell scored in only two innings on Sunday, but made the most of them as its pitchers held the Miner offense in check all afternoon to record a doubleheader sweep over Missouri S&T, winning 5-2 in the opener and 2-1 in the nightcap.

The Miners, who came into the game as one of the top hitting teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, managed only eight hits in the two games Sunday as they were swept in a doubleheader for only the second time this season.

S&T scored in the first inning of both games, getting their run in the first game after Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) led off the game with an infield single, moved to second on a ground out and to third on a wild pitch.  Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS)'s sacrifice fly brought McCord home.

However, the Cardinals (17-22, 9-17 GLVC) came back in the bottom half of the inning by scoring five times against Miner starter Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) before the first hitter was retired, with two plays leading directly to four runs.  William Jewell loaded the bases on a single and two walks, then Drew Mitrisin singled the first run home to tie the contest.

The next hitter, Kaleb Shaw, lofted a ball into left that went in and out of the glove of leftfielder Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South), allowing two runs to score.  That was followed by a ground ball off the bat of Tim Herrera that hit the lip of the infield grass and scooted under the glove of shortstop Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS), allowing two more runs to score.

Bowe got out of the inning without any further damage being done, then settled in and kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard over the next five innings.  Despite his efforts, the Miners weren't able to get much going against WJC starter David Collins, who set down 13 straight Miners beginning with the Hall sacrifice fly in the first.

The Miners got two runners on base in the fifth, but Collins struck out McCord at the end of a 13-pitch at-bat to escape that jam, then the Miners got their first two runners on base in the sixth on consecutive singles by Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland), Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) and Hall, the last of which cut the lead to 5-2.  That, however, turned out to be the last run the Miners could get across the plate.

Hall had both of S&T's runs batted in as the Miners outhit the Cardinals 5-4.

In game two, the Miners scored again in the opening inning when McCord drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Hall.

William Jewell loaded the bases in the first but didn't score against S&T starter Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City), but put together a two-out rally in the next inning to get their runs.

Tommy Thornton and Brian Rezin singled with two outs, then David Smith tripled to the fence in right center to score both runners and give the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish.

The Miners got their leadoff hitter on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't bring them around.  The best chances came in the sixth, as Voth-Gaeddert led the inning off with a double.  He got to third with one out, but a pair of fly outs, the last on a ball hit by Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) that was caught on the warning track on a running catch by Shaw, squelched the rally.

Wobbe had two of the Miners' three hits in the game, while the other hit came from Voth-Gaeddert, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the process with his double in the sixth.

Despite the losses, Missouri S&T (26-11, 16-8 GLVC) remains in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference by percentage points over Rockhurst, who completed a four-game sweep of Drury Sunday with a pair of shutout wins.  The Miners are one game ahead of third place Drury with eight conference games remaining.

S&T will step outside of GLVC play Tuesday to host Lincoln University in a 3 p.m. non-conference tilt at the S&T Baseball Field.
