Box Score 2 LIBERTY, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team moved back into first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division Saturday, taking advantage of Rockhurst's doubleheader sweep over Drury by sweeping its own twinbill at William Jewell by scores of
5-4 and
9-7.
The wins, coupled with the Drury losses, moves S&T one game ahead of the Panthers in the GLVC West standings. But it didn't come easy for the Miners, who jumped out to big leads in both contests and had to hold off late rallies by the Cardinals to come away with the wins.
S&T took a 5-0 lead in game one after two innings, only to see William Jewell cut the lead down to 5-4 by the time the fifth inning ended. Three Miner relievers held the Cardinals scoreless over the final four innings to nail down the win.
In game two, the Miners led 9-1 after scoring six times in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh before
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) put out the fire to record his 12
th save of the season.
The Miners jumped all over Jewell starter Matt Milz at the outset of game one, scoring three in the first and knocking him out of the game in the second in the process of scoring twice.
Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) had a leadoff triple in the first and scored on
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS)'s one-out single. Voth-Gaeddert was thrown out stealing, but
Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) drew a walk and
Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) singled to precede a two-run double by
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage).
S&T loaded the bases with nobody out in the second on hits by
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) and
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) and McCord being hit by a pitch, then an error on a ball hit by
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) scored Rich. Following a pitching change, Voth-Gaeddert drove in the second run of the inning on an infield out.
William Jewell got a run in the fourth off Miner starter
Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) on an RBI single by Drew Mitrisin and put three on the board in the fifth, the big blow being a two-run double by Willie Gaball. However, Gronek got out of the inning and turned the game over to the bullpen, which held the Cardinals scoreless for the balance of the game to preserve Gronek's ninth win of the season.
Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) pitched a scoreless sixth,
Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) pitched the seventh and eighth innings and Dunsford pitched around a one-out single in the ninth to get the save.
The Miners, who were outhit 11-9 in the opener, got two hits in game one from Wobbe.
In the second game, S&T put a run on the scoreboard in the first inning again on Hall's two-out RBI single, then added two runs in the fifth, getting one on an run-scoring single by Lockett and the other when Voth-Gaeddert reached on an error to score McCord.
The Cardinals got a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Miners broke the game open with a six-run outburst in the sixth inning.
Caffrey started the inning with a single, followed by hits from Brown and
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) to load the bases.
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) drew a walk to force in a run, then Wobbe did likewise to make it 5-1.
After the first out was recorded, Lockett singled in a run and with two outs, Hall drove in two more runs with a hit. Caffrey reached on an error to keep the inning alive and Brown followed with another hit to drive in another run.
However, the Cardinals tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-5, thanks in part to a two-run triple off the bat of Tom Herrera. William Jewell started a rally in the seventh after the first batter was retired thanks to a hit and a walk, forcing the Miners to bring in Dunsford to close it out.
A wild pitch moved the runners ahead, which was followed by a sacrifice fly, a walk and a run-scoring single by J.P. Bartmess to trim the lead to two. Dunsford ended things after the Bartmess hit by getting Clarke O'Dowd to ground out.
The Miners held a 12-8 advantage in hits in the nightcap, getting two hits apiece from McCord, Lockett, Hall and Brown.
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) improved his record to 6-2 by pitching into the fifth inning and allowing only one run and three hits.
The Miners and Cardinals will wrap up their weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday that begins at noon.
