ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T came away with a split in Wednesday's doubleheader with Drury, winning the opening game 4-2 but dropping the nightcap 6-5 as the Panthers scored two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to take back first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division.
The Miners answered a Matt Borgschulte home run in the fourth inning that tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, then two relievers wrapped up the opening game win for starter
Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) to put S&T in first place by percentage points until the Panthers won the second game of the twinbill to regain their one-game advantage over the Miners.
Drury took the lead in the second inning of game one on an RBI single by Maury Wilmes, but S&T scored twice in the third to take the lead. Following a leadoff walk to
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS),
Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) reached base on a bunt as the throw to second to try and cut down Wobbe was wild.
After
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) bunted the runners over and
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) walked to load the bases,
Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) singled up the middle to put the Miners in front.
Borgschulte homered to open the fourth, but the Miners came right back in the bottom half of the frame with the two decisive runs.
With one out,
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) bunted his way on base, then stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. McCord and Lockett drew two out walks, then Voth-Gaeddert singled to the opposite field to score Rich and McCord with the go-ahead runs.
Bowe, who scattered four hits and allowed the two runs in his four innings of work, turned the game over to
Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) in the fifth and he pitched around a walk in each of his two scoreless innings.
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) walked the first man he faced in the seventh, but got through the remainder of the inning unscathed as he recorded his 10
th save.
Voth-Gaeddert and Hall had two hits apiece for S&T, who outhit the Panthers 6-4 in the opener.
In game two, it was the Miners who grabbed the lead in the second inning when Rich singled with two outs to score
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage), who had doubled with one out. Wobbe followed with a double to score Rich to give S&T a 2-0 lead.
Drury tied the contest with two runs in the third, but the Miners regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. S&T loaded the bases on a leadoff walk to Lockett and back-to-back singles by Voth-Gaeddert and Hall.
Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) was hit by a pitch to force in a run, then Brown hit a sacrifice fly to score Voth-Gaeddert with the second run of the inning.
The Panthers would again tie the game in their next at-bat on a two-run single by Nick Thimesch, but S&T would move back into the lead in the seventh when Wobbe opened the inning with a leadoff double and came in to score on an RBI single by Lockett.
S&T escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth, when Dunsford – who entered the game with two outs – got Alex Larkin to ground to first on a close play at the bag. However, a leadoff walk in the ninth got the Panthers' game-winning rally started.
Following the walk to John Neill and a sacrifice bunt, Thimesch singled to left to put the runners on the corners. Dunsford got Brett Neill to pop out to short for the second out, but Caleb Cole bounced a single through the middle to tie the game at five.
A walk to Borgschulte loaded the bases, then Dunsford hit Wilmes with a pitch to force in the go-ahead run.
The Miners had a chance in their half of the ninth after Wobbe drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second. However, Panther closer Laurent Zenoni got Lockett to pop out and Voth-Gaeddert to line out to center to end the game.
Drury (23-11, 16-6 GLVC) outhit S&T 13-12 in the second game, as Wobbe had three hits to lead the way for the Miners.
Missouri S&T, who fell four spots to No. 16 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll for NCAA Division II, ended the day with records of 24-9 overall and 14-6 in the GLVC. S&T will open a four-game series Saturday against William Jewell with a doubleheader in Liberty, Mo.
