ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T got a pair of runs batted in from
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) and solid pitching throughout the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to gain a split with Lewis University, winning the nightcap 2-1 after suffering an 8-7 loss in game one.
Brower's RBI fielder's choice in the fourth inning drove in the decisive run as the Miners were able to gain the split.
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) pitched into the sixth inning to pick up his fourth win of the season, while
Drew Schrader (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) and
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) got the final five outs in order to preserve the win.
S&T jumped on top in the nightcap in the second when
Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a two-out single by Brower.
Lewis tied the game in the third when a wild pitch allowed Drew Buddle to score, but the Miners got that run back right away in the fourth.
The Miners loaded the bases with three consecutive one-out hits in the inning, then Brower reached on a fielder's choice as the Flyers were unable to turn an inning-ending double play, allowing Hall to score the go-ahead run.
Lewis threatened in the sixth with a walk and an error to begin the frame. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk to load the bases, Schrader took over on the mound and got pinch-hitter Kyle Kapka to fly out to short center and fanned Kyle Huber to end the inning.
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) entered the game in the seventh and retired the Flyers in order to pick up his fifth save. S&T outhit Lewis 7-4 in game two; Hall had two of the Miners' seven hits.
In the opener, the Flyers roughed up starter
Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) in the first two innings, but the Miners were able to rally and tie the game in the eighth before Lewis pushed across the winning run in the bottom half of that inning.
S&T got out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning on RBI hits off the bats of Hall and
Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS), but the Flyers got those runs back in the bottom of the first and put three more on the scoreboard in the second to take a 5-2 lead.
The Miners got a solo home run from
Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) in the third, but Lewis scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend its lead to 7-3.
S&T staged a comeback in the eighth as it batted around and scored four times to tie the contest.
Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) started things with a leadoff double, followed by an opposite field hit by Hall.
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage)'s RBI single scored the first run of the inning, then with two outs, the Miners loaded the bases when Brower was hit by a pitch. Pinch-hitter
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) followed with a two-run single to cut the lead to one, then an error on a ball off the bat of
Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) tied the game as Brower crossed the plate.
However, Lewis (11-5, 4-2 GLVC) regained the lead in the eighth on Andrew Brauer's RBI single off Dunsford, who came into the game for
Ian Smith (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Independent) – who took the loss -- after Buddle reached base to open the inning and was sacrificed into scoring position.
The Miners (13-4, 3-1 GLVC) were outhit 13-10 in the opener, as Hall, Caffrey and Brown all had two hits apiece.
S&T will complete its weekend road trip Sunday with a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside.
