ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday in the opening game of its doubleheader with Truman State, but was able to hold off a late Bulldog charge in the nightcap to earn a split and win the weekend series.  The Miners won the second game 5-4 after Truman won game one 5-3.

In the second game, S&T built a 5-0 lead through five innings, but the Bulldogs scored four runs against the Miner bullpen over the final three innings and had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh.  Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville), the fifth Miner pitcher of the game, got Devon Myers to hit into a game-ending double play to preserve the victory.

The Miners took the lead in the second when Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) scored on a sacrifice fly by Ian Smith (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Independent), then scored again in the third when Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) singled in Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS).

S&T tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning, as Voth-Gaeddert drove in his second run of the game with a hit that scored Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) and after avoiding a tag at first after a lineout by Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) that would have ended the inning, scored along with Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) on a two-run double to the fence by Morrison.

Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City), who got the win on the mound for S&T, held the Bulldogs scoreless on one hit over the first six innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.  However, Truman got on the scoreboard in the seventh, added two in the eighth – the second an unearned run after an error with two outs – and got an RBI double from Paul Trenhaile after Brett Marino was hit by a pitch to start the ninth.

Dunsford got a strikeout for the first out, then a throwing error on a ball hit by Zac Larkin put runners on second and third with one out.  Weston Lewis was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Dunsford was able to induce a ground ball off the bat of Myers to Wobbe for the double play that ended the game.

The Miners were outhit in the second game 7-5, getting two hits apiece from Voth-Gaeddert and Morrison.

Truman built a 4-0 lead in the opener after three innings, scoring a single run in the second and adding three in the third, the last two on a two-run single by Blake Marino.  All three of the Bulldog runs in the third scored with two outs.

The Miners cut into the lead in the fourth when freshman third baseman Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) belted a three-run homer off Logan Siegler, but was unable to get another runner into scoring position in the final three innings.

Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) had two of the Miners' six hits in the opener as the Bulldogs outhit S&T 9-6.  Drew Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) was tagged with the loss on the mound.

The Miners, who won three of four in the opening series from Truman, return to action Saturday when they begin a four-game series with Harris-Stowe at the S&T Baseball Field.  The teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon each day.
