Box Score (Louisville, Ky.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners struggled all day on the defensive end of the court and couldn't contain the Millersville offense as it saw its four game winning streak come to an end in a
78-61 defeat on Monday afternoon at Knights Hall in Louisville, Ky.
The Lady Miners (5-4) got off to fast start scoring the game's first six points and 10 of the first 14 and held 12-8 lead for the first eight minutes of the contest. The Maruader offense got on track and used a 13-0 run spanning four minutes to take a 21-12 advantage with seven minutes to play in the half.
Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) snapped the run with a three, but S&T wouldn't get closer than six the rest of the contest.
Millersville (7-2) extended its lead to 31-20 with 4:03 left in the stanza, but the Lady Miners were able to whittle it down to six behind three points from Heil and a basket by
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton). The Maruaders answered though scoring seven of the last eight points of the frame to go into the locker up 38-26.
S&T was just 9-for-23 (39.1 percent) from the floor, made 1-of-2 from three and made 7-for-12 at the foul line.
Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) and Heil led the way with nine and eight points respectively.
Millersville shot 52 percent (14-for-27) from the field, was 1-of-4 from three and 9-for-16 at the charity stripe. Aurielle Mosley led all scorers with 13 points. Miesha Cousins, Celeste Robinson and Senada Mehmedovic had five apiece. The Maruaders won the edge on the glass 19-to-15.
Millersville pushed its lead to 14 points right out of the gates before S&T trimmed it single digits on a three by
Kyesha Hall (Dodson, La./) at the 16:14 mark. That would be the last time the game was in single digits. The Maruaders answered with a putback off a miss on the ensuing possession to move it back to double figures.
That proved to be a recurring theme in the second half as the Lady Miners were dominated on the glass getting outrebounded 20-9 in the frame and gave up nine offensive rebounds resulting in nine points for Millersville.
The Maruaders extended their lead to as many as 18 points with less than five minutes to play. S&T battled back to get as close as 11 with 2:13 to play on Heil's second three of the contest. Millersville would score the last six points of the game for the final margin.
Mosley led all scorers with 29 points. She was one of four Maruaders in double figures. Mashira Newman, Robinson and Muhmedovic each added 10 points. Millersville shot 50 percent in the second half and finished the game knocking down 28-off-55 (51 percent) from the floor. It was 3-of-10 from three and 19-for-29 at the foul line.
Heil led the way with 15 for S&T while Cooper added 14 more. The Lady Miners shot 45 percent (22-for-49) from the field, 3-of-6 from three and were 14-for-21 at the foul line.
The Lady Miners return home to resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday when they play host to Wisconsin-Parkside beginning at 5:30 p.m.
