S&T to close fall semester basketball slate with twinbill vs. Lions

12/17/2012 4:30:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's basketball teams will take to the court one last time before breaking for the holidays, as the Miners and Lady Miners host Lindenwood University in a doubleheader Wednesday at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.

The Lady Miners will kick things off Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against the Lions, with the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.  Following Wednesday's doubleheader, both teams will take a seven-day break from team activities as mandated by the NCAA and will return to practice on Thursday, Dec. 27.  The Lady Miners' first game after Christmas will be on Dec. 30 against Alabama-Huntsville in Louisville, Ky., while the Miners will resume play Dec. 31 at home against Benedictine-Springfield.

Women's Game

The Lady Miners will playing for the first time since opening Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 66-63 win over Drury, a game that saw Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) score 16 points apiece as Knar connected four times from three-point range and Cooper go seven-of-10 from the floor to earn GLVC “Player of the Week” honors.

Missouri S&T brings a 3-3 record into Wednesday's game and is paced by senior forward Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan), whose scoring average of 15.7 points per game ranks sixth in the GLVC as does her field goal percentage of 55.6 percent.  Meanwhile, Knar is second in the conference in three pointers per game at 2.8 (17 total) and is shooting 42.5 percent from long range.

Knar is averaging 12.2 points per game, while Cooper and Kyesha Hall (Dodson, La./) are scoring 7.8 a contest.

Lindenwood snapped a six-game losing streak Saturday with a 66-62 win at Illinois Springfield, getting 18 points off the bench from Marissa Lehnig.  The 2-6 Lions' top scorer on the season is Tori Kuhn with an average of 10.9 points per game, while Julie Hlinak is just under the double figure mark at 9.9 an outing.

Men's Game

The Miners will head into Wednesday's game with a 3-3 record, but will have a different looking team on the floor due to injuries and a suspension that came from their most recent contest, a 97-30 win over Baptist Bible on Dec. 8.

S&T had already lost the services of freshman guard Aaron Emmanuel (Brampton, Ont./LaLumiere School) for the season due to an injury suffered in late November and has now lost senior guard Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) to an injury that will sideline him for the balance of the year as well.  Missouri S&T will apply for medical hardships for both Emmanuel and Foster.

In addition, the Miners will play Wednesday without junior guard Mudi Eruteya – who along with Foster is tied for the team lead in scoring with 13.2 points per game – as he was suspended for the Lindenwood game for leaving the bench area during an on-court incident during the Baptist Bible game.

Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School), coming off his top scoring game as a Miner with 22 points in S&T's latest contest, is averaging 9.5 points a game as is Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East).  S&T will also get Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East) back into the lineup for Wednesday's contest; Jackson is the Miners' second-leading rebounder with 4.8 a game and is shooting 57 percent from the floor but missed the Baptist Bible contest due to an injury.

Lindenwood comes into Wednesday's game with a 5-3 record after upending Maryville on the road 61-53 Saturday afternoon.  The Lions, playing in their first season in the Mid-America intercollegiate Athletics Association as they are in their final season of reclassifying to NCAA Division II, have one of that league's top scorers in guard Alex Bazzell, a transfer from UMKC who is scoring 18.6 points per game.
