Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team continued the roll it's on sweeping past Wisconsin-Parkside
3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-22) on Saturday evening in Rolla. S&T earned its eighth straight win overall and 13
th straight at home.
The offenses were the story in the opening set as the Miners (12-5, 8-0 GLVC) had 14 kills in 35 chances while the Rangers (11-6, 3-5 GLVC) finished with 10 kills in 39 opportunities. S&T held an 11-10 lead before going on a 6-3 run to push its lead to 17-13. Parkside would close to within 19-16, but the Miners scored six of the final seven points to win 25-17.
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) paced the S&T attack in the opening set with four kills apiece, while the team hit .314.
The Miners gave up the first three points of the second set, but rallied with six of the next seven to take the lead at 6-4. They wouldn't trail the rest of the set as they built a six point advantage and never allowed the Rangers to get closer than three points as S&T went onto win 25-20. The Miners had 15 kills in the set and finished hitting .271 percent. They were led by
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) with four kills each.
S&T trailed a couple of times early in set three, but quickly responded to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Miners led 17-11 and appeared to be cruising to a sweep, but the Rangers fought back. They scored nine of the next 13 points to close within 21-20. S&T pushed its lead up to 23-20 on a kill from Wright and a stuff block from Haslag and Meyer. Parkside, though took advantage of a service error and a block by Bridget Nickel and Jeni Heller to get back with 23-22. Haslag recorded a kill, setting up match point and then a bad set by Ryann Arundel ended the match at 25-22. Wright and Haslag combined for nine of S&T's 15 kills in the set.
The Miners finished the match with 44 kills against 11 errors to hit .244 percent. Wright led the way with 12 kills. Haslag added nine, Kosmopolis finished with eight while
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) dropped in seven.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 41 set assists while
Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) led the way with 16 digs. She was one of four players in double figures in digs. Meyer and
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 13 apiece while Costello added 12.
The Rangers finished the contest with 36 kills against 16 errors to hit .145 percent. They were led by Nickel with 15 kills. Chelsea Neave finished with 12 assists while Sarah Mlachnik had 18 digs.
S&T is back at home on Sunday afternoon when it entertains Lewis University beginning at 1 p.m.
