Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's late comeback effort fell short Sunday afternoon against Rockhurst at the S&T Soccer Field, as the Miners dropped a
2-1 decision to the 16
th-ranked Hawks in their final home game of the 2012 season.
The loss dropped the Miners into a tie for 10
th place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with one game remaining – the top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament – but did not drop them out of contention for a playoff spot. S&T will need to win that final contest Wednesday at Drury and have Lewis lose its game at Wisconsin-Parkside to qualify for the tournament.
Wednesday's game against fifth-ranked Drury will get underway at 8:30 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
On Sunday, the Miners and Hawks were scoreless at halftime, but Rockhurst broke on top just 2:48 into the second half when Mark Magee put in a shot from the wing.
S&T had one scoring chance about 15 minutes into the second half when
E.J. Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) put a ball into the box that had to be cleared out from in front of the net by the Rockhurst defense, but in the 72
nd minute, the Hawks were able to extend their lead when Paolo Scoppola redirected a throw-in by George Skevington.
The Miners were able to break through Rockhurst goalkeeper Ryan Bass with just over five minutes remaining in regulation time, as
Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) headed in
Gilberto Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish)'s corner kick to cut the lead in half. S&T had a couple of late threats, but had two shots miss the mark and one by
Carlos Gomez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Sra Del Recurerdo) in the waning seconds that Bass turned away.
Rockhurst (13-2-2, 11-2-2 GLVC) outshot the Miners 14-8 in the contest, as S&T goalkeeper
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) finished with two saves.
