Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team dominated matters early in the contest Friday night and rolled to a
4-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Kentucky Wesleyan at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners, who moved to a season-best three games above .500 at 7-4-2 (6-4-1 GLVC) with the win, scored twice in the first 17 minutes of play and got all four of their goals by the two-minute mark of the second half, allowing head coach Joe Ahearn to use a lot of players in the second half.
Ben Bartnicke (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) got the Miners on the scoreboard 13:13 into the game as he redirected a cross from
Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) past goalkeeper Bill Ison. A little over three minutes later, S&T scored again when
Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) headed in a free kick taken by
Oscar Alvarez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Ciudad de Mexico).
The Miners got their third goal of the first half at the 39:44 mark when
David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) tallied his first collegiate goal, redirecting a corner kick taken by
Gilberto Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish).
Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) closed the scoring for S&T when he finished off a play in front of the net after a feed from
Timmy Kenny (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) for his second goal of the season.
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) and
Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) shared the goalkeeping duties for the Miners Friday, with Jackson playing the first half and Gesell the final 45 minutes. Jackson did not have to make a save in the opening half – one that saw S&T hold an 18-1 advantage in shots – while Gesell made two in the second half, including a leaping save on Adam Bradley's shot nearly nine minutes into the half that turned out to be the Panthers' best scoring opportunity.
The Miners finished with 25 shots to the Panthers' three.
Missouri S&T moved up a spot into seventh place in the GLVC standings with Friday's win and will face the team immediately ahead of it – Southern Indiana – Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field. The Screaming Eagles lead S&T by one-half game after losing 2-1 at Drury Friday.
