Box Score (Liberty, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners nearly let a 13 point lead get away from them but were able to make their free throws down the stretch to hang on and win at William Jewell 67-63 on Saturday afternoon.
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) scored a career-high 26 points and matched her career-high with 14 rebounds.
S&T (13-5, 8-3 GLVC) got off to fast start knocking down 9 of its first 15 field goal attempts to build a 20-9 lead eight minutes into the contest. Parks and
Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) were key contributors in the key run scoring 16 of those 20 points.
William Jewell (11-6, 6-5 GLVC) regrouped on the offensive end and began to get back into the contest thanks to its rebounding on the offensive end. The Cardinals scored 14 of the next 16 points and took its first lead of the contest on a put back from Lauren Hall with 5:19 remaining in the opening frame.
The final five minutes was a see-saw affair as each side answered each other basket for basket. The Lady Miners were able to regain their lead thanks to its shooting at the foul line making 7-of-8 in the final five minutes and regain a three-point advantage.
Jessie Wheeler buried a three with 0:40 left to tie the game, but
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) gave S&T the lead at the break making 1-of-2 at the line with 0:12.5 remaining.
The Lady Miners cooled after their hot start making just 3 of their final 10 shots but still finished the half shooting 48 percent. They were 1-of-6 from downtown and 8-for-9 at the foul line.
Parks, Meyer and Kemp combined for 26 of the 33 points. Parks had 11 points and eight rebounds. Meyer and Kemp had nine and seven respectively.
William Jewell shot 42 percent (13-for-31) and was 3-of-9 from downtown. Wheeler led the way with eight points. Chelsea Meeks had seven while Holly Switzer and Hall had six apiece.
S&T extended its halftime lead to double digits in the first seven minutes of the second half. The Cardinals wouldn't go away cutting it down to a six point game with just over six minutes to play.
The Lady Miners extended their lead to eight points, but once again WJC continued to hang around eventually cutting the S&T lead to 60-59 with 3:00 to play.
Parks scored four points in the next minute to extend the lead back to five with 2:00 remaining. Neither side scored again until Switzer hit a pair of free throws with 0:24 left to make it a 64-61 contest.
Parks was fouled after a timeout and went to the line and made 1-of-2 to make it a four point game with 0:18 left. Aerial Smith's basket with 0:10 left made it a one possession game but the Cardinals were forced to foul and fouled Parks where she hit both free throws to preserve the win.
S&T shot 53 percent as a team (26-for-49) and was 13-of-19 at the charity stripe. The Lady Miners outrebounded Jewell by a 32-to-30 margin. Meyer joined Parks in double figures with 16 points. Kemp added nine more.
The Cardinals were 22-for-56 (39 percent) from the field, 5-of-19 from downtown and 14-for-18 at the foul line. Switzer led four WJC players in double figures with 13 points. Hall dropped in 12 while Meeks and Wheeler added 11 apiece.
S&T returns home next Thursday evening beginning a three-game homestand with Quincy starting at 5:30 p.m.
