Box Score (Quincy, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners fought an uphill battle all-game long fighting back from double digit deficits on two different occasions but couldn't quite get over the hump in its 72-62 loss at Quincy on Saturday.
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) led the way with 16 points while
Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) scored a career-high 13 points and
Quintonia Evans (Evansville, Ind./) had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
S&T (11-5, 6-3 GLVC) fell behind 4-0 to start before getting on the board on a layup by
Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown). The two sides traded baskets over the next four minutes with the Hawks (11-6, 6-3 GLVC) leading by as many as five.
The Lady Miners pulled within 13-12 on a jumper by Evans and continued to hang around that mark until tying the game at 21-all on a three from the right wing from McLeod with 8:19 left in the half.
Quincy responded going on a 10-2 run over the next two minutes getting four points from Ali Schwagmeyer and three's from
Kassidy Shuman and Lucy Cramsey to build its biggest lead of the half.
S&T got the deficit to 36-34 on a three from Kemp with 1:34 to play but Linsay Henke put the Hawks back up four with a jumper on the ensuing possession. The Lady Miners had a couple of chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute but turned it over twice. Quincy was unable to take advantage though missing a couple of shots.
After a slow start shooting S&T warmed up to finish the half at 45 percent (13-for-29), knocked down both of its attempts from three and were 6-of-6 at the foul line. It was outrebounded by an 18-16 margin. Parks led the way with 12 points while Evans and
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) had six each. Kemp and McLeod finished with five apiece.
Quincy finished the half shooting 49 percent (17-of-35) and was 4-for-9 from downtown. Schwagmeyer led the way with 12 while
Karlee Gengenbacher had eight. Darla Gatschenberger and Henke added six apiece.
The Lady Miners started the second half cold from the floor making just 3 of its first 12 shots. The Hawks took advantage going on a 15-6 run to open the second half to grab its largest lead of the game at 53-40 with 13:22 to play.
S&T began to chip away at the deficit over the next five minutes by scoring 14 of the next 15 points to tie the game at 54-all on a jumper by McLeod. McLeod and Evans combined to score 13 of those points.
Quincy regained the lead when Gengenbacher made 1-of-2 at the line with 7:34 to play. The Lady Miners had a chance to take the lead on a couple of different occasions but couldn't get the bounces to go their way.
The Hawks then proceeded to scored 14 of the next 17 points to pull away down the stretch. S&T closed to within 71-62 on a three from
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) with 0:34 left but just ran out of time.
The Lady Miners shot just 35 percent in the second half to finish the game shooting 24-of-60 (40 percent). They were 3-for-6 from downtown and 10-of-12 at the foul line.
Quincy shot just 37 percent in the second half and finished the contest shooting 30-for-70 (43 percent). It was 6-of-16 from downtown and 7-for-11 at the charity stripe. Schwagmeyer led four Hawk players in double figures with 18 points. Gengenbacher added 15 while Henke and Cramsey had 14 and 13 respectively.
S&T will be back at home next Thursday night when it plays host to Rockhurst beginning at 5:30 p.m.
