Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The cold temperatures outside Rolla found its way inside the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building on Thursday evening as the 24
th ranked Missouri S&T Lady Miners fell to Northern Kentucky 52-34.
It was the fewest points S&T's scored in a game since a 61-23 loss at Truman on Jan. 23, 2002.
The first half was a defensive struggle as both sides struggled to score for a majority of the half. S&T (10-3, 5-1 GLVC) was hitting early knocking down five of its first nine shots to take an 11-7 lead on a jumper by
Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) at the 11:17 mark.
The Norse (11-2, 4-1 GLVC) regained the lead by scoring the next six points, but
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) tied the game with a jumper at the 7:33 mark.
The Lady Miners went cold the rest of the half missing their final 10 shots as NKU closed the frame on a 10-0 run behind the play of Casse Mogan and Ellen Holton. The two combined for 17 of the Norse's 23 points in the frame.
S&T went scoreless over the final 7:33 of the first half.
The Lady Miners turned it over 10 times which resulted in 11 points for Northern Kentucky. S&T was just 6-for-24 (25 percent) from the field while the Norse shot 38.5 percent (10-for-26). The Lady Miners held a 17-16 lead on the glass.
Meyer and Parks had four each to lead the Lady Miners.
S&T scored six of the first eight points to begin the second half to cut the lead to six points just two minutes in, but the Norse responded with five straight pushing the advantage back to double figures.
The Lady Miners got as close as 30-23 on a pair of free throws by Parks at the 15:19 mark. From there NKU went on a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to build an 18 point lead on a jumper by Kelsey Simpson.
S&T got as close as 15 points on an old-fashioned three-point play from Kemp with at the 7:10 mark.
The Norse answered extending their lead to 20 and didn't look back settling on the 18 point advantage
The Lady Miners were just 6-of-28 (21.4 percent) in the second in shooting a season-low 23 percent (12-for-52) from the field. Parks and Kemp led S&T with 10 apiece while Meyer added six. Parks also added nine rebounds.
NKU shot 50 percent in the second half to finish the contest shooting 21-of-48 (44 percent) from the floor. It also outrebounded the Lady Miners by a 37-to-29 margin. Mogan led all scorers with 18 while Holton dropped in 13. Holton and Sadie Bowling had eight rebounds apiece.
S&T returns home on Saturday to take on Bellarmine at 1 p.m.
