QUINCY, Ill. – Thanks to two goals from Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) and a stellar defensive effort down the stretch, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team completed a sweep of its two games at the Quincy Soccer Bowl by downing Lindenwood University 2-1 Sunday evening.
Brinkmeyer scored a goal in each half to give the 13th-ranked Miners a 2-0 lead with just over 22 minutes to play. After the Lions trimmed the lead to one a little over three minutes later, the Miners were able to hold off a flurry of shots in the final 19 minutes of the contest to pick up their second win of the season.
The first of Brinkmeyer's two tallies came at the 23:34 mark of the opening half, as he headed in a free kick from Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) to put the Miners on top. S&T controlled play for much of the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Lions 7-2 and getting four corner kick opportunites.
Brinkmeyer got his second goal of the game in another free kick situation when he put home a rebound off a shot from Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) that was stopped but mishandled by the goalkeeper. The goal, at the 67:54 mark, was answered moments later when Franz Husbands converted a Miner turnover into a goal inside the far post to make it 2-1.
The Lions continued to come after the Miners after Husbands's goal, getting four shots at the Miner net in the next 12 minutes. S&T goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) turned away all of them, including a head ball effort by Stephan Duff with 6:02 left on the clock.
Lindenwood got 10 shots off in the second half to S&T's seven, but the Miners finished with a 14-12 advantage in that category for the game. McNamee finished with five saves on the evening.
Missouri S&T will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday when it travels to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst in a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Miners will play their home opener two days later against GLVC newcomer William Jewell on Sunday, Sept. 11.
