Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners swept past Quincy 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T had a balanced effort in the effort finishing with 44 kills led by Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) with 13 while Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) added 11 more. The Lady Miners (4-3, 2-0 GLVC) hit over 30 percent for the second straight match.
The opening set was tight featuring 11 ties and 9 lead changes. The score was tied at 13-all when S&T pulled away scoring eight straight points behind the serving of Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden). Quincy (2-4, 0-2 GLVC) closed to within six on two different occasions but got no closer. A setting on error on the Hawks ended the first set.
The Lady Miners had 15 kills in the set led by Bekebrede with four while Wright, Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) and Melanie Shehorn (Flora, Ill./Flora) had three each. As a team S&T hit 24 percent in the frame.
Quincy held an early lead in the second set before S&T took the lead for good. The set was as close as three points for the majority until the Lady Miners began to pull away late. Bekebrede set up set point with a kill then S&T won the set on an attack error by Briann Joslin.
The Hawks hit 27 percent in the second set with 15 kills while the Lady Miners were slightly better at 32.4 percent with 13 kills. Bekebrede and Wright combined for nine of the kills.
After giving up the first point in the third set S&T quickly began to pull away scoring six of the next seven points. Quincy closed to within 9-7 on a kill by Lyndsay Kooi, but the Lady Miners responded with a 9-1 run to grab an 18-8 lead. The Hawks got within 20-11 but S&T was able to put it away as Shehorn ended the match with a block.
The Lady Miners finished the match with a total of 8.5 blocks led by Zellmer with six block assists. Shehorn had one solo and one assisted block while Bekebrede had six assisted blocks.
Defensively S&T held the Hawks to just a 14 percent hitting percentage and finished the match with 55 digs. Demotte and Jennifer Kegler (Ballwin, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) led the way with 12 digs apiece while Emily Jaeger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) added 10 more. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) dished out 30 assists.
The Lady Miners return to action on Tuesday night when they travel down to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury University beginning at 7 p.m.
