Late rallies propel Miners to doubleheader sweep at Bellarmine

3/26/2011 10:02:32 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – While most of the Bellarmine University community was busy celebrating the national championship won by the school's men's basketball team Saturday, Missouri S&T's baseball team was coming up with a few late heroics of its own to win both ends of a doubleheader from the Knights.

The Miners scored twice in the top of the ninth to win 6-4 in the opener, then used a seventh inning rally to force extra innings and won 4-2 in nine to complete the sweep.

The first game was a back-and-forth affair throughout the afternoon, as the Knights answered the Miners until the ninth. S&T got a run in the second when Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) singled to open the inning, moved up on a ground out , advanced to third on a wild pickoff attempt at second and scored on a squeeze bunt by Nick Burke (Good Hope, Ill./West Prairie HS).

Bellarmine tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but the Miners regained the lead in the sixth. Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) walked to lead off the inning, stole second with one out and moved to third on a wild pitch. McCord scored on a hit by Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon), then Carter scored later in the frame on a two-out single off the bat of Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS).

After the Knights scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to tie it again, the Miners got a two-out RBI double from Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) to move back into the lead in the seventh – only to see Bellarmine tie it in the bottom half on an error.

The Miners staged their game winning rally in the ninth after the first two hitters were retired. McCord drew a walk and stole second, then Davenport singled home McCord with the go-ahead run. Davenport advanced to second on the throw and scored moments later on a hit by Carter.

Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest), who entered the game at the start of the eighth inning, threw a perfect ninth to pick up the victory. The Miners outhit the Knights 9-6 in the contest, as Davenport, Carter and Voth-Gaeddert had two hits apiece.

In the second game, the Miners fell behind in the opening inning on a two-run double by David Weinstein and the Knights carried that 2-0 lead all the way to the seventh inning. Benjamin Fuchs held the Miners to just one hit through the first six innings, but after an infield hit by Carter to open the seventh, the Miners were able to break through to knot the score and force extra innings.

Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) followed Carter's hit with a double into the gap to cut the lead in half, then after being sacrificed over to third by Voth-Gaeddert, Pieper scored the tying run on a passed ball.

Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) held the Knights to just the two runs in the first before turning the contest over to Korn in the seventh and he proceeded to keep Bellarmine off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the ninth, Pieper got a leadoff triple and Voth-Gaeddert followed with a hit to give the Miners their first lead in the nightcap. Later in the inning, Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) executed a successful squeeze bunt to give S&T a needed insurance run.

Bellarmine loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Korn got Lee Strauss to pop out to close the game.

The Miners finished with seven hits in game two, getting two apiece from Carter and Pieper. Korn got the win in the second game as well as S&T moved back over the .500 mark on the season at 10-9 overall and 4-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

S&T will wrap up its weekend road trip Sunday with a noon doubleheader at Northern Kentucky.
