MONTICELLO, Ark. – Missouri S&T's baseball team bounced back from its first loss of the season with two big innings in the second game, then held off a rally to take a 10-8 decision in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader at Arkansas-Monticello. UAM beat the Miners 12-6 in the opener.
The Miners overcame an early 3-1 deficit in the nightcap with a five-run third inning and added four more in the sixth. S&T needed all of those runs, as the host Boll Weevils scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh – and had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh before Drew Schrader (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) entered the game to shut down the rally and preserve the win.
S&T got on the board until the opening inning when Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) led off with a triple and scored on Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West)'s sacrifice fly. UAM tied the game off Miner starter Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) in the bottom half of the inning, then scored twice in the second to go up 3-1.
With one out in the third, McCord tripled for the second time, then Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) drew a two-out walk. Following a wild pitch that moved Carter up, Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) singled up the middle to bring home McCord. Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) followed Pieper's hit with one of his own to tie the contest.
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) walked after the Voth-Gaeddert hit to load the bases and Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) got a two-run single to put the Miners in front. Moments later, Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) got an RBI single to score Adams to give the Miners a 6-3 lead.
S&T took advantage of some sloppy play by the Boll Weevils to put their four runs on the board in the sixth. Nick Burke (Good Hope, Ill./West Prairie HS) reached on the first of three UAM errors to open the frame, which was followed by a walk to McCord and another error following a bunt single by Davenport, which allowed both runners to score. Carter doubled home Davenport for the third run of the inning, then another error after a hit by Pieper led to the fourth run of the inning.
The Boll Weevils got three of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth, then staged a rally in the seventh as five of their first six batters reached base, with two runs scoring and the bases being loaded with one out. Freshman Drew Schrader (Troy, Mo./Troy Buchanan HS) was brought into the contest and proceeded to fan Fernando Garcia and got Tanner Laran to bounce to third to end the game.
Gronek picked up his second win of the season on the mound, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits. The Miners finished with 12 hits to UAM's 11, with Pieper getting three of the hits and Van Dyke picking up two.
In the opener, the Boll Weevils roughed up Miner starter Nick Johnson (St. Charles, Mo./Duchesne) for eight runs in the first two innings, scoring twice in the first on Wayne Hawkins' two-run homer and six times in the second, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Demarcus Rieves.
S&T got a single run in the second on Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS)'s RBI single that scored Voth-Gaeddert, then broke loose for five runs in the fifth – which cut the lead at the time to 9-6.
After a leadoff walk to Wobbe, Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) was hit by a pitch and then an error on a ball hit by McCord loaded the bases. Davenport drove in the first run with a ground out, which was followed by a two-run double by Carter. Another error kept the inning alive, after which Voth-Gaeddert reached on an infield hit to bring home one run – and a throwing error allowed a second run to score on the play.
However, the Boll Weevils got a run in the bottom half of that inning and two more in the sixth to put the game away.
The Miners had only four hits in the opener, two of them coming off the bat of Voth-Gaeddert.
The Miners and Boll Weevils will wrap up the weekend series with another twinbill on Sunday at noon.
