10/28/2011 10:32:00 PM

Box Score (Quincy, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners nearly experienced a bout of déjà vu on Friday evening at Quincy University. Two years ago S&T went up there won the first two sets then dropped the next three letting a six point lead in the final set slip away. Fortunately for them history didn't repeat itself as the Lady Miners were able to hang on to win 3-2 (25-15, 25-12, 14-25, 21-25, 15-13) at the Pepsi Arena.

S&T (19-8, 12-3 GLVC) fell behind 6-3 to start the match then rallied scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 10-7 lead. The Hawks (12-12, 6-9 GLVC) got as close as two before the Lady Miners began to pull away. They extended their lead to 22-14 and were able to coast in with the 25-15 victory.

S&T dominated the second set leading for the most part from start to finish. The Lady Miners led 16-9 but allowed back-to-back points drawing Quincy within five. That would be the closest it got however as S&T scored nine of the final 10 points in taking the commanding 2-0 lead.

The Hawks flipped the tables on the Lady Miners in the third set hitting 39.3 percent and holding S&T to a negative hitting percentage to win 25-14.

Quincy kept its strong play in the fourth set as S&T rallied from a pair of deficits but couldn't get over the hump as the Hawks won 25-21.

In the fifth and final set Quincy scored the first two points before the Lady Miners ran off five straight to take the lead for good. S&T pushed its lead out to four on a couple of occasions but each time the Hawks responded. The Lady Miners had match point at 14-10 but errors on three consecutive swings allowed Quincy to close within 14-13. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) ended the run with her only kill of the night in giving S&T the 15-13 win.

The Lady Miners recorded 27 kills against four errors in the first two sets but had only 24 the rest of the way as they finished hitting 16.1 percent for the match. Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) led three S&T in double figures with 16 kills. Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) added 15 while Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) had 10. Costello had 42 assists while Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 22 digs.

The Hawks finished the match with 52 kills while hitting 17.2 percent for the match. Briann Joslin had 17 kills while Taylor Jacobs contributed 11. Lyndsay Kooi also had 42 assists while Sommer Holder had 12 digs.

Thanks to Rockhurst 's win over Missouri-St. Louis the Lady Miners were able to extend their lead in the GLVC West Division back to two matches with three conference matches to play.
