RENSSELAER, Ind. – After a two-week struggle to find the net, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team appears to be rounding back into the squad it was prior to that time and is surging towards a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in the process.
Missouri S&T won its final road game in GLVC play Sunday with a
2-0 win over Saint Joseph's, scoring a goal in each half to improve its conference record to 7-4-1 and overall mark to 9-4-1 with three home games remaining. The Miners will enter Friday's contest with Lewis University in a three-way tie for fifth place in the standings with the Flyers and Quincy, with only one-half game separating the trio from fourth place Drury.
Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) got the Miners on the scoreboard at the 22:14 mark, as he got to a ball that got away from Puma goalkeeper Michael Korman and put it into an empty net.
That margin held up until 11:25 remained in the contest, when
Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ) took a pass from
Ben Bartnicke (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) and sent a shot to the opposite post that got by Korman to double the S&T lead.
That was all Miner goalkeeper
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) needed as he recorded his second straight shutout, making two saves along the way. The Miners held a 13-7 advantage in shots for the game, although the Pumas (4-9-2, 4-6-2 GLVC) had six corner kicks to the Miners' one. Only two of Saint Joseph's seven shots made it on goal.
The Miners will face Lewis at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the S&T Soccer Field.
