(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners ran its winning streak to three in a row after sweeping past Quincy 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-18) on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. For the Lady Miners it's their longest winning streak ever.
The opening set was tied through the first 16 points then S&T (7-3, 2-0 GLVC) went on an 11-2 run to take a 19-10 lead. The Hawks (2-9, 0-2 GLVC) got as close as 20-13, but the Lady Miners responded with four straight points to set up set point. S&T won the set on a service error to take it 25-14.
The Lady Miners hit an astounding 62 percent in the frame recording 13 kills against no errors in 21 chances. Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles), Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) and Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) combined for nine of those kills. S&T held Quincy to just a 12.5 percent hitting percentage in the stanza.
The second stanza went along the same lines as the first with it being close early on before the Lady Miners began to pull away around the midway point. S&T stretched its lead to 20-13 before the Hawks began chipping away cutting the lead to three points.
The Lady Miners again stretched their lead to five points but Quincy hung around getting within 23-21. S&T won the set 25-21 on a service error by Morgan Ebner and a block by Klump.
The Lady Miners hit well again in the second stanza recording 11 kills against only three errors to finish with a hitting percentage of 28 percent. The S&T defense was even better in set two holding the Hawks to just a seven percent attack percentage.
In the final set the Lady Miners ran out to big lead to start at 11-3 and eventually stretched it to 16-6. Quincy made a run cutting it to 16-10 before the Lady Miners pushed it back out. The Hawks made one more run getting to within 23-18 but S&T closed it out with a kill by Melanie Shehorn (Flora, Ill./Flora) and a service ace by Annie Smith (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) for their third straight sweep of the season.
The Lady Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of 28.9 and had 33 kills in 76 chances. Bekebrede, Wright and Klump combined for 23 of the kills.
S&T's defense clamped down on the Hawks holding them to just six percent for the match and forced them into 23 attack errors. Brittany Atkinson led Quincy with eight kills.
The Lady Miners return to action next weekend when they travel to the state of Indiana for a pair of conference matches beginning Friday night against the University of Indianapolis at 6 p.m. (CST).
