ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – After playing to ties in its first two Great Lakes Valley Conference contests, the Missouri S&T men's soccer team picked up a huge road victory Sunday as it knocked off Lewis University 2-1.
The Miners scored both of their goals in a span of 1:15 in the first half, opening the scoring at the 29:03 mark when Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick. Haw had a hand in the second goal as well, firing off a shot that was stopped by Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal but went right to Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ), who put the rebound into the net to give S&T a 2-0 advantage it would take to the intermission.
Lewis cut the lead to a goal midway through the second half on a goal by Jose Ibarra, but the Miner defense and goalkeeper Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) held firm from that point to lock up the win.
The Flyers (1-3, 1-2 GLVC) had four shots at the net in the final 10 minutes in an effort to tie the game, including a head ball effort by Mardoche Beya with under a minute to play that Gesell turned away. Gesell, who was making his first start of the season in goal for the Miners, finished with eight saves for Missouri S&T in a game where Lewis held a 16-11 edge in shots.
The Miners (1-0-2 overall and in the GLVC) return to their home pitch Friday to face Rockhurst in a 5 p.m. contest.
