Lady Miners fall to Lewis, 69-62 in GLVC Tournament

Box Score (Evansville, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners saw its season come to an end with a 69-62 loss to the Lewis Flyers in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Miners (14-14) scored the first basket of the contest before the Flyers (17-11) ran off the next seven points and wouldn't relinquish the lead the rest of the half. S&T got as close as one on two different occasions but each time Lewis had an answer.

The Flyers eventually built their lead to 10 with a 12-4 run that spanned nearly 3:30 minutes. S&T began to cut into the lead getting it down to 35-32 on a three-pointer by Brittany Percival with 0:25 left, but the Flyers had the final answer as Devon Carbaugh hit a three in the corner as the first half came to an end.

The Lady Miners shot the ball well in the opening half making 15-of-23 (62.5 percent), but were outrebounded 15-to-6 and turned it over nine times. Lewis took advantage on the glass getting eight second chance points and turned the nine S&T miscues into 13 points.

The Flyers shot 52 percent (14-for-27) and were 4-of-10 from behind the three-point arc. Lewis also made 6-of-7 at the charity stripe.

Percival and Jazmine Bell had eight apiece to lead S&T while Julie Meyer had six. The Flyers were led in scoring by Lory Shaw with eight while Carbaugh and Kelly Dianis had seven apiece.

Lewis opened the second half strong with a 17-4 run to build its halftime lead to 55-36 five minutes into the frame. Kady Currin hit three straight three's in the run.

After its strong shooting in the opening half the Lady Miners struggled making only 5-of-18 in the first 10 minutes of the frame.

S&T had its opportunities to score but were unable to score inside missing at least six layups.

The Lady Miners trailed by 14 with just under seven minutes when Currin hit her fourth trey of the half. S&T climbed back with six straight points and had several opportunities to get closer but were unable to convert on some good looks.

The Lady Miners got it as close as seven on a three by Bell with just over a minute to play but the Flyers were able to make the plays down the stretch to get the victory.

S&T shot only 38.5 percent in the second half (12-for-32) but still finished the contest shooting 49 percent from the floor (27-for-55). The Lady Miners were 5-of-10 from behind the arc but just 3-of-5 at the foul line.

The Flyers were only 10-of-21 from the floor in the second stanza, but were 4-of-7 from behind the three-point line. They finished the contest making 50 percent of their shots (24-of-48) and outrebounded the Lady Miners by a 34-to-22 margin. Lewis was also 13-of-16 at the charity stripe.

Bell finished with 16 points leading the Lady Miners while Meyer had 11. Percival and Hailee Parks had eight each.

Currin led four Flyers in double figures with 14 points, all in the second half, Jenny Turpel had 12 while Labrenthia Murdock finished with 11 and Shaw had 10.

S&T finishes its season with a record of 14-14 and had its streak of four straight winning seasons snapped.
