(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners allowed a season-high 12 three-pointers in its
87-71 loss to Drury on Monday evening. The 12 three's matched the number that Wayne State (Mich.) made in the second game of the season.
The Panthers (22-6, 14-3 GLVC) got out of the gates strong scoring eight of the first 10 points just over two minutes into the contest. The Lady Miners (13-12, 7-9 GLVC) closed to within a pair on a pair of free throws by Hailee Parks and a layup by Julie Meyer almost a minute later.
Drury took control of the game over the next four minutes with a 16-0 run. S&T turned it over five times in the run and attempted only one shot. Katie Pritchard and Lindsay Ballweg combined to score 14 of the 16 points in the run as the Panthers were 6-for-6 from the field in that time.
The Lady Miners began crept back into the game with a 12-3 run of its own cutting the lead to 29-20 on a basket by Meyer with 8:13 to play. A three by Bri Anton on the ensuing possession pushed the Panther lead back to 12 and the lead would stay in that neighborhood for the next three minutes.
Jazmine Bell got the lead back under 10 with a pair of free throws and S&T had a chance to get it down to seven but were unable to convert at the foul line.
Ballweg extended the lead back to double digits with her second trey of the half as Drury held a 46-33 advantage with under a minute left before Courtney Kemp hit a jumper with 0:21 left pulling the Lady Miners within 11 at the intermission.
S&T shot nearly 62 percent from the floor in the opening half while Drury shot just over 50 percent in the stanza. The difference in the half was that the Panthers held a 19-to-6 margin on the glass, including 9-0 on the offensive end, which resulted in seven second chance points.
Drury was 5-for-10 from behind the arc while S&T was just 1-for-4.
Pritchard and Ballweg led the Panthers with 14 and 12 points respectively.
Meyer had seven for the Lady Miners while Parks and Bell dropped in six apiece.
The two sides traded baskets for the first eight minutes of the second half before S&T scored six straight points midway through the frame to get within 59-53.
That would be the closest it got though as the Panthers answered rattling off 11 of the next 13 points pushing their lead to 70-55 with 7:18 left. Ballweg hit a pair of three's in the run while Pritchard added another.
Drury eventually built its lead to 87-65 on a free throw by Anton, before the Lady Miners closed the game with six straight points.
The Panthers shot 65 percent in the second half and were 7-of-8 from downtown while S&T shot 52 percent but was just 3-for-8 from behind the arc.
The Lady Miners had the advantage in the paint outscoring Drury by a 40-22 margin and off turnovers 26-22, but the Panthers had the edge in second chance points 14-0.
Drury finished the contest shooting 57.1 percent (28-of-49) from the floor and were 12-for-18 from downtown. It was led in scoring by Pritchard with 27 and Ballweg with 23. Caitlin Shouse had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Melanie Oliver finished with 10 points.
S&T finished the contest shooting 26-of-46 (56.5 percent) but were only 4-for-12 from behind the arc and 15-of-23 at the charity stripe. Meyer matched her career-high with 17 points while Brittany Percival chipped in 15 and Bell finished with 14.
The Lady Miners return to action on Thursday evening traveling to St. Louis, Mo., to try and avenge an earlier season loss to Missouri-St. Louis. The game begins at 5:30 p.m., at the Mark Twain Building.
