Lady Miners clinch spot in GLVC Tournament with 83-63 win over Maryville

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners clinched their fifth straight GLVC Tournament appearance with an 83-63 win over Maryville on Saturday afternoon in Rolla.

The game was tied at 4-4 two minutes into the contest before the Lady Miners (13-11, 7-8 GLVC) went on a 9-0 sparked by four points from Hailee Parks. The Saints (5-19, 3-13 GLVC) hung around keeping it around a five point margin over the next four minutes.

Thanks to some hot shooting in the opening stanza S&T was able to build a double digit lead by the 11:23 mark on a layup by Jazmine Bell. The lead wouldn't dip lower than seven the rest of the game.

The Lady Miners eventually stretched their lead to 47-24 with a 19-4 run that spanned over five minutes. Courtney Kemp had five in the run while Julie Meyer and Fareedah Washington had four apiece. Andrea Downs and Brittany Percival each hit a three-pointer in the run.

Maryville fought back closing the half with a 10-2 run in the final three minutes capped by Megan Vennemann's three at the buzzer pulling within 49-34.

S&T shot close to 70 percent for a majority of the half before cooling slightly at the end to finish at 63.6 percent (21-for-33). It dominated the paint outscoring the Saints by a 28-16 margin and turned eight turnovers into eight points.

Meyer led S&T with 10 points in the stanza, Percival dropped in nine while Parks and D'Naya Mims accounted for six apiece.

Maryville came out of the gates strong starting the second half scoring the first five points to dwindle the lead down to 10, but it wouldn't get closer as the Lady Miners went on a 7-0 run pushing the lead back to 17 points by the 14 minute mark. Kemp and Mims each contributed three points in the run.

The Saints closed to within 14 points near the midway point of the frame on a layup by Mikal Bencomo. Meyer essential put the game away scoring five straight points in the span of a minute pushing the lead back to 19 points.

S&T took its largest lead of the game at 24 points with less than two minutes to play on an old-fashioned three-point play by Katelyn Heil.

Abby Deuthman and Angela Pepowski scored the Saints final four points of the game to settle on the final margin.

After good shooting in the opening half both sides struggled in the second as the Lady Miners shot 40 percent (12-for-30) while Maryville was 11-of-32 (34.4 percent). S&T still finished the game shooting over 50 percent (33-for-63) while holding the Saints to under 40 percent at 24-of-61 (39.3 percent).

The Lady Miners controlled the glass outrebounding Maryville by a 46-to-34 margin and pulled down 16 offensive rebounds resulting in 22 second chance points.

Meyer led four S&T players in double figures with 15 points. Percival dropped in 14 while Mims and Kemp had 12 apiece. Heil finished the ball game with eight points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Pepowski led all scorers with 17 points while Deuthman had 13 and Tori Tyner finished with 12.

The Lady Miners close out the home portion of their schedule on Monday evening when they host Drury University beginning at 5:30 p.m.
