(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners wasted little time getting on the board scoring 0:51 into the contest en route to a 2-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday night in Rolla. With S&T's win and Rockhurst's loss to Northern Kentucky, the Lady Miners moved into fifth place in the GLVC and sit just a half game behind Southern Indiana for fourth.
It didn't take long for S&T (6-3, 6-3) to get on the score board as it took the opening kick-off right down the field and was fouled by the Panthers (2-9, 1-9 GLVC) about 25 yards from goal. Shelly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy Springs) took the free kick and put it on goal where the Kentucky Wesleyan keeper knocked it down but couldn't corral it and the ball trickled to Morgan Lockowitz (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin ) who put it into the open net not even a minute in.
The Lady Miners kept the pressure on and added to their lead in the ninth minute on a goal by Leah Williams (Lawrence, Kan./Free State). Williams received a pass from Melissa Young (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias), spun around in the middle of the box and fired a shot that went just inside the near post for her first of the year.
S&T had some other chances but couldn't find the back of the net as it outshot the Panthers 6-3 in the opening frame. Each side had three shots on goal.
Kentucky Wesleyan applied some pressure early in the second stanza and had some shots on goal but Stacey Luquette (St. Amant, La./St. Amant ) turned all three away to record her first shutout of the year.
The Lady Miners finished the game with a 16-7 edge in shots, but only 7-6 in shots on goal. Williams, Young, Jaclyn Standfast (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and Melissa Moorefield (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) each had two shots to lead S&T.
With the victory the Lady Miners also established a new school record for wins in GLVC play with six breaking the mark of five set by last year's team.
S&T returns to action on Sunday afternoon hosting Southern Indiana in a key GLVC match-up beginning at 12 p.m.
