Urbana's running attack too much for Miners in Senior Day setback

10/30/2010 7:42:08 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T had a difficult time slowing down Urbana's running game Saturday afternoon, as the Blue Knights ran for 418 yards on its way to a 42-25 win over the Miners in the final home game of the 2010 season at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Urbana had two players reach the 100-yard mark on the ground, led by Boise Moon with 226 yards on the afternoon. Moon got the scoring started by dashing 73 yards for a touchdown three plays into the Blue Knights' second series of the game.
Missouri S&T cut the lead to 7-6 on a pair of Joe Drahos (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) field goals, the first from 25 yards away at the 5:19 mark of the first period and the other from 22 yards with just under a minute to go in the quarter. However, Urbana was able to take a 21-6 lead to the locker room thanks to a pair of big plays that resulted in touchdowns.
The first came on a 35-yard pass from D.J. Mendenhall to Matt Hightower, followed by a 32-yard scoring run by Moon with 2:01 remaining in the half.
Curterris Golden (Chicago, Ill./John Hope) closed out an impressive drive – five running plays that covered 69 yards – with an 18-yard scoring run to trim the lead to 21-12 early in the third quarter. Golden's touchdown run came one play after Ryan Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who had the first four carries of the drive, rumbled 40 yards to get the ball into Urbana territory.
Urbana answered right back, as Josh Turnbo closed out an 83-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Turnbo had one of the big plays in the drive with a 26-yard reception on third-and-18, then reserve quarterback Evan Gehlert completed a 43-yard pass to Diamond Hart to get the ball to the S&T five-yard line to set up Turnbo's score.
S&T cut the lead to nine again on its next drive, getting a 33-yard completion from Steve Watson (Berkeley, Ill./Walther Lutheran) to Chad Shockley (St. James, Mo./John F. Hodge) to set up a scoring pass from Watson to Kevin Dillon (Plano, Texas/Plano East) that covered 22 yards to make it 28-19 with 6:36 left in the third quarter.
But a 39-yard kickoff return by Turnbo into S&T territory set up another Urbana score, as Mendenhall threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to LaVelle Spivey to extend the margin to 16 again. The Blue Knights got one more score in the final period on a five-yard run by Mendenhall.
The Miners added another score in the final period as well, as Watson threw a five-yard scoring pass to Shockley, who had another big game in his final home game at Missouri S&T.
Shockley finished the day with 287 all-purpose yards, including 176 on 11 receptions to become just the third player in school history to reach 1,000 yards in receptions in a season; he ended the day with 1,001.
S&T had 422 yards of total offense, its second-highest mark of the year, running for 180 and passing for 242. Golden had 96 yards on the ground for the Miners, while Watson and Matt Elliott (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) combined to complete 17-of-35 passes for the 242 yards.
However, the Blue Knights ran up 595 yards of total offense that included the 418 on the ground. Mendenhall joined Moon in the 100-yard category as he ran for 102 and also threw a pair of touchdown passes.
Kirk Stilwell (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) had 10 tackles to lead the Miners, while Marc Fagan (Marceline, Mo./Marceline) and Freddie Dugard recorded quarterback sacks.
The Miners, now 2-7 on the season, will play their final two games away from home beginning next Saturday against Saint Joseph's in Rensselaer, Ind.
