Miners rout 'Hounds, gain share of GLVC regular season title

10/24/2010 6:34:02 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T made a strong statement to close out its conference schedule Sunday – and got a huge reward for its efforts.
The Miners took a 1-0 lead to the intermission against Indianapolis, then blitzed the visiting Greyhounds for three goals in a span of seven minutes in the second half to post a 4-0 win and gain a share of the regular season title in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Missouri S&T finished 9-2-3 in GLVC play this year and on a percentage basis finished in a tie with Lewis and Northern Kentucky as the league champs. The Miners will be the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament – due to a loss to No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky last weekend – and will host Bellarmine next Sunday in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament.
The Miners , who earned their  first regular season conference title in men's soccer with Sunday's win, will face the Knights at noon at the S&T Soccer Field. The teams played to a scoreless tie in Louisville on Oct. 17.
Lewis, who landed the top seed among the three teams based on its 10 victories in GLVC play (S&T and NKU had nine wins each), will play Indianapolis in that first round matchup, while NKU will host Rockhurst and Drury will play at Quincy in the other first round games.
In Sunday's game, the Miners spent the first half playing into a stiff wind at the S&T Soccer Field, but was able to break on top in the 28th minute of play. Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville), one of four seniors playing in their final regular season home game Sunday, sent a corner kick in front of the goal was redirected into the net by Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park).
S&T proceeded to put the game away with its three-goal outburst early in the second half.
The first came at the 55:20 mark, as Shaffer made a feed from the wing to Trent Doerner (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) in the box and he proceeded to put a shot past UIndy goalkeeper Justin Roberts to make it 2-0.
Just over six minutes later, David Kekec (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) got a ball in front of the Greyhound bench and ripped a shot from outside the box into the upper right corner to give the Miners a three-goal lead. That goal was followed 42 seconds later by another tally from Shaffer, who tapped in a pass from Oscar Alvarez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Ciudad de Mexico) to give S&T its final goal of the afternoon.
The Miners outshot the Greyhounds 19-12 in the game, but only six of the 12 UIndy shots made it on net. Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) was credited with five saves for the Miners; S&T defender Kenny Gravlin (Florissant, Mo./St. Louis University HS) also cleared a shot out from in front of the net in the first half. The shutout for the Miners was their school record 10th of the season.
Missouri S&T, 9-3-3 overall, will face Columbia College in a non-conference game Tuesday in Columbia, Mo., at 7 p.m., prior to facing Bellarmine Sunday.
