Miner swimmers capture pair of dual meets over Tigers in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Missouri S&T's swimming team came away with a pair of dual meet wins over the weekend, getting 13 first place finishes and a trio of NCAA provisional cuts to win the competitions over Ouachita Baptist at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. The Miners won Friday's meet 145-60 and followed that with a 115-89 victory in Saturday's dual meet.
The Miners got winning performances on an individual basis on Friday from Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.75 – good for an NCAA Division II B-cut in the event – and 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.80, Danny Murphy (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) in the 500-freestyle in 4:51.91 and 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:01.23, Jeff Enge (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) in the 200-yard backstroke with a B-cut time of 1:54.79 and Zlatan Hamzic (Panceva, Serbia/Uros Predic) in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.12.
S&T relays also came away with wins Friday in the 400-yard medley relay from the team of Enge, Hamzic, Schranck and Hamilton Vernon (Omaha, Neb./Burke) in 3:28.82 and 400-freestyle relay quartet of Matt Zieger (St. Joseph, Mo./Central), Vernon, Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School) and Sean Deegan (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) with a time of 3:12.39.
The Miners added a relay win Saturday to close the meet, with the team of Schranck, Vernon, Dole and Deegan taking the 200-freestyle relay in 1:25.36.
Saturday's meet saw the Miners get wins from Phil Arve (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:53.59, Murphy in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:10.72 -- earning a B-cut time in the process – and 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.80 and Schranck in the 100-butterfly in 51.64 seconds.
Second place finishes from the Miners came from Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:05.06 and 200-backstroke in 1:59.43, Arve in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.66, 500-free in 4:53.33 and 200-butterfly in 1:55.88, Deegan in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.84 seconds and 100-freestyle in 47.53 seconds, Enge in the 200-IM in 1:57.66 and Zach Lemons (Flagstaff, Ariz./Flagstaff) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:11.05.
Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) had a runner-up finish to Arve in the 1,000-free Saturday with a time of 10:15.35, while seconds were also posted by Schranck in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.21, Dole in the 50-freestyle in 22.12, Lemons in the 400-IM in 4:11.77 and 100-breaststroke in 59.75, Vernon in the 100-freestyle in 48.10, Deegan in the 100-backstroke in 52.96 seconds and Arve in the 500-freestyle in 4:52.70,
S&T's 200-yard medley relay took second on Saturday as the group of Enge, Hamzic, Vernon and Deegan had a time of 1:36.81, just off the Tigers' winning time of 1:36.15.
The Miners got third place showings from Norris in the 200-freestyle in 1:48.33 and 500-freestyle in 5:00.39, Vernon in the 50-free in 22 seconds flat, Lemons in the 200-butterfly in 2:00.61, Dole in the 100-freestyle in 49.39 seconds and Nate Kamrath (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) in the 200-backstroke in 2:01.25 in Friday's meet.
Welsh was third in the 200-freestyle Saturday in 1:49.07 and 500-freestyle in 4:54.52, as was Enge in the 400-IM in 4:12.48 and 100-backstroke in 53.15 seconds, Dole in the 100-free in 48.77 seconds and Hamzic in the 100-breaststroke in 59.88 seconds.
Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier) took fourth in the 200-free in 1:48.69 and 200-butterfly in 2:02.82, as did Lemons in the 200-IM in 2:00.01 and Hayden Price (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove) in the 100-freestyle in 49.42 seconds on Friday; Martinez had another fourth place showing Saturday in the 200-free in 1:49.36 and in the 100-butterfly in 51.64 seconds.
Zieger added a fourth in the 100-freestyl e in 51.24 seconds as did Norris in the 500-freestyle in 5:05.48.
The Miners will return to action Oct. 30 when they square off with Lindenwood University and Saint Louis University at the St. Peters Rec Plex in St. Peters, Mo.
