Lady Miners go wire-to-wire in 70-48 win over Kentucky Wesleyan

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners led wire-to-wire in its 70-48 win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.

S&T (9-5, 4-2 GLVC) started strong scoring the game's first seven points and never looked back as it built a 10-point advantage six minutes into the contest. Hailee Parks, Andrea Downs and Brittany Percival scored the Lady Miners first 15 points. The Panthers (8-6, 1-4 GLVC) cut the deficit to seven on a jumper by Danielle Roe with 10:08 to play, but that would be the closest they got the rest of the day.

Jazmine Bell buried a three on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to double digits and sparked a 12-4 run over the six minutes as S&T extended its lead to 30-15. Kentucky Wesleyan cut the lead to 12 with three free throws before Bell gave the Lady Miners a 14 point advantage heading into the locker room.

S&T shot 52. 4 percent (11-for-21) from the field in the opening half and turned 16 Panther turnovers into 16 points. The Lady Miners also had the edge in the paint at 14-6. The defense continued its strong play from Thursday night limiting KWC to just 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from the floor.

S&T started the second half strong with a 10-5 run to push its lead over the 20 point mark in the first five minutes. The lead dipped below 20 only once more in the frame as the Panthers closed to within 47-30 with 11:33 remaining in the contest.

The Lady Miners put the ball game away with an 8-0 run over the next 3:30 to build their lead to 25 points. Katelyn Heil hit the big shot with a three-pointer at the end of the run. The lead eventually grew to as big as 27 in the final couple of minutes before Kentucky Wesleyan's Demi Wendt got hot scoring eight of her 10 points after the balance of the game was decided.

S&T cooled considerably in the second half shooting the basketball as it was only 10-for-30 (33.3 percent) from the floor, but still ended up at over 40 percent for the game. It did its damage at the foul line by making 16-of-19 in the frame.

The Panthers on the other hand shot nearly 50 percent in the stanza (12-for-25) to finish over 40 percent for the game as well.

The Lady Miners scored 24 points off of 26 Kentucky Wesleyan turnovers while scoring nine second chance points off of 13 rebounds.

Downs and Percival led S&T with 11 points each while Parks and Bell chipped in with 10 apiece. Heil and D'Naya Mims finished with seven each and Meyer dropped in six. Fareedah Washington had nine rebounds, seven on the offensive end, as the Lady Miners held a 34-29 edge on the glass.

Wendt led the Panthers with 10 points while Roe and Amanda Harnist had eight apiece.

S&T returns to action on Thursday evening when they travel to Rennselaer, Ind., to take on Saint Joseph's College in a GLVC match-up beginning at 5:30 p.m.
