Lady Miners use balanced effort to defeat Maryville 85-67

Box Score (St. Louis, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miners used a balanced effort as all 10 players scored for S&T including four in double figures in its 85-67 win at Maryville University on Thursday night. The Lady Miners recorded season-highs in points (85) and field-goal percentage (62.5 percent).

S&T (11-9, 6-6 GLVC) built an early three-point lead before the Saints (5-14, 3-8 GLVC) came back to tie at 11-11 on a three by Abby Duethman. Hailee Parks gave the Lady Miners the lead for good on a lay-up which sparked an 8-0 run.

Maryville kept it around a four-point margin until Chelsea Stangel came off the S&T bench scoring eight points, including a pair of three's, in a four minute stretch giving the Lady Miners a 33-26 advantage with just over three minutes to play in the opening frame.

The lead grew to double figures thanks to back-to-back lay-ups by Fareedah Washington and Julie Meyer with 1:18 to play. Angela Pepowski pulled Maryville back to within nine with 0:10 left but Parks answered with a lay-up at the buzzer to extend the lead back to double digits 39-28 at the break.

S&T shot the ball extremely well in the opening frame making 18-fo-31 (58.1 percent) from the floor while outrebounding the Saints by a 23-to-9 margin.

Stangel and Parks led the Lady Miners with eight apiece while Andrea Downs had seven and Meyer finished with six.

The Saints shot just 38.7 percent (12-for-31) from the floor and were only 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) from behind the arc.

Kate Childs lead Maryville with eight points while Duethman and Pepowski had six apiece.

S&T was on fire shooting the basketball in the second half as it converted on 12-of-17 shots (70.6 percent) and were 19-of-22 at the foul line. Maryville though refused to go away shooting at 56 percent clip (15-for-27) from the floor.

The Lady Miners built a 14-point lead only 1:30 into the frame but the Saints answered each run keeping it around a 10-point ball game for a majority of the first 13 minutes.

Brittany Percival gave S&T a 15-point lead on a lay-up with 7:04 to play but once again Maryville responded going on a 7-0 run eventually cutting the lead to 71-63 with 5:36 left in the game.

The Lady Miners sealed the game with an 11-0 run that was capped by a three-point play by Percival with 2:28 to play. Katelyn Heil gave S&T its biggest lead of the night at 85-65 with a three-pointer with 1:50 left in the contest.

Meyer had a career-high 16 points to lead the Lady Miners and was joined in double figures by Parks with 13 while Percival and Downs had 12 apiece.

Duethman led all scorers with 20 points. Childs finished with 14 and Pepowski had 10.

S&T returns to action next Thursday when it travels to Louisville, Ky., to take on Bellarmine University beginning at 4:45 p.m. (CST).
