Miners break loose to rout Rangers before home audience

1/23/2010 7:42:35 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – The Miner basketball team has been like a time bomb waiting to explode – and the big bang came Saturday at Billy Key Court as Missouri S&T ended a six-game losing streak in emphatic fashion in front of its largest home crowd of the year.
Posting their largest margin of victory in a conference game since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the Miners ripped visiting Wisconsin-Parkside 90-64 with a balanced scoring effort that saw five players end up in double figures.
The Miners used an 18-6 run to close the first half with a 17-point lead, then had another 18-6 spurt in the final eight minutes to put away the Rangers for their second win in GLVC play.
S&T never trailed in Saturday's contest, using an eight-point run in the first four minutes to take an early 10-2 lead. The Miners were able to build their lead to as much as 11 following a three-pointer by Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) at the 9:30 mark before the Rangers trimmed the lead down to five over the next four minutes.
But starting with a layup by Byron Bundy (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) with 4:06 left in the half, the Miners were able to expand the lead to 44-27 by the intermission as they also held the Rangers to just two field goals over those final four minutes.
The Miners continued to hold a double figure lead throughout the second half, going up by 20 after a basket by Mike Malat (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) with 15:54 left. UW-Parkside scored nine of the next 11 points to trim the lead to 13 and still trailed by 16 with 8:14 to play, but the Miners salted away the win with a deluge of points – 18 in a span of 3:39 to lead 84-56 with just 4:35 to go.
Missouri S&T finished the game by shooting 48 percent from the floor and held the Rangers to 32.8 percent on the afternoon. The Miners held the edge in virtually every category, including rebounding by a 51-40 margin, turnovers as they forced 17 while committing just 12 and points in the paint where they outscored the Rangers 46-22.
Bundy led the contingent of five Miners in double figures with 20 points. S&T also got 18 points from Malat, 15 from Adam Knollmeyer (Linn, Mo./Linn), 14 from A.J. Mandani (Brampton, Ontario/) and 10 from Foster.
Knollmeyer and Mandani also recorded double figures marks on the boards, with Knollmeyer hauling in 13 caroms and Mandani – who also added seven assists – a career-high 11 to give the Miners their first two double-double performances of the 2009-10 season.
Wisconsin-Parkside (8-12, 3-8 GLVC) had four in double figures with Jamere Dismukes and Grant Johnson leading it with 14 points apiece.

The Miners (6-13, 2-9 GLVC) will face conference newcomer Maryville University Thursday in St. Louis in an 8 p.m. contest.  The Saints lost 81-67 Saturday at home to Saint Joseph's.
