Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners trailed by as many as 17 points with 3:49 remaining in the opening stanza. It nearly rallied back getting to within two points late in the second half, but it couldn't quite get over the hump as Lewis pulled away for a 69-59 win on Thursday evening in Rolla.

Both teams started off the contest shooting the ball well as the Lady Miners (10-8, 5-5 GLVC) made 5-of-8 from the field while the Flyers (10-8, 6-3 GLVC) were even better going 8-for-10. Hailee Parks and Julie Meyer kept S&T close in the early going combining to score 12 of the first 14 points, but defensively the Lady Miners had no stop for Lewis's Jenny Turpel and Labrenthia Murdock who accounted for 13 of the Flyers first 17 points.

Lewis held a three-point advantage just over seven minutes into the contest before going on a 7-0 run over the next 1:28 seconds pushing its lead to 24-14. The Lady Miners countered with an 8-0 run of their behind five points from Jazmine Bell and three from Courtney Kemp to get back within a pair at the 9:20 mark.

Neither side was able to score for a little over a minute before the Flyers went on a 15-0 run over the next four-plus minutes which included three straight three's during one stretch. Kelly Monaco had six in the run off back-to-back three's only 0:35 apart.

S&T battled back to within 39-32 at the break by closing the frame on a 10-0 run getting a pair of three's from Brittany Percival to lead the charge.

Lewis finished the frame shooting 48.5 percent (16-for-33) from the floor while the Lady Miners were only 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) from the field. They were able to stay within striking thanks to their three-point shooting connecting of 4-of-7 and all six of their free throw attempts.

Turpel led all scorers with nine in the frame while Murdock, Monaco and Kady Currin had six each. S&T was led by Parks with eight; Bell added seven and Percival delivered six.

The Flyers extended their halftime lead to 10 points within the first five minutes of the second half and held it there for roughly the first 10 minutes.

The Lady Miners began to battle back getting within three points by the seven minute mark and had a chance to get closer but Meyer missed the back end of a two shot foul. D'Naya Mims kept the possession alive for S&T, but a turnover resulted in a fast-break lay-up for Lewis and a five-point advantage.

Andrea Downs got the Lady Miners within 55-53 on a three-pointer at the 6:15 mark, and had a chance to tie the game but were unable to come up with a defensive rebound which resulted in an open three to put the Flyers back up by five.

After a bucket by Parks pulled S&T back within three, it got a stop on the defensive end by forcing a turnover and Downs was fouled sending her to the line with 4:21 left. She missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and Lewis came away with the rebound.

Murdock buried a three on the ensuing possession which sparked a 7-1 run allowing the Flyers to build a nine-point lead with just over a minute to play. The teams traded points in the final minute allowing Lewis to come away with a 69-59 victory.

The second half was pretty even on the stat sheet as neither team shot the bell particular well from the floor as the Flyers shot 38.5 percent (10-for-26) while the Lady Miners were 9-fo-24 (37.5 percent). The difference; however, was behind the three-point arc and at the charity stripe. Lewis connected on half of its three-point attempts (3-for-6) and was 7-of-8 at the foul line. S&T on the other hand was just 2-for-7 from downtown and made only half of its 14 free throw attempts.

Turpel led all scorers with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Currin with 14 and Murdock with 11.

Parks dropped in 12 points for the Lady Miners while Meyer contributed 11. Bell finished with nine points, Downs and Kemp had eight apiece.

S&T concludes its three-game home stand on Saturday against Wisconsin-Parkside beginning at 1 p.m.
