Lady Miners clip Rockhurst 69-61

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners shot a season-high 52.4 percent from the field en route to its fourth win in five games with a 69-61 victory over Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.

The Lady Miners (7-4, 2-1 GLVC) got off to a fast start knocking down seven of their first 10 shots opening the game on a 16-4 run. Six of those seven baskets were layups as S&T ran the floor well in the first six minutes. Hailee Parks, Brittany Percival and Jazmine Bell combined for 14 of the 16 points in the run.

The Hawks (4-6, 0-3 GLVC) clawed back to within eight on a layup at the 12:15 mark, but the Lady Miners slowly extended the lead back to double digits building its largest lead of the half on a layup by Parks at the 7:16 mark. Rockhurst again cut the lead to single digits, but S&T closed out the half strong scoring six of the final 10 points to head into the locker room with a 30-20 advantage.

The Lady Miner defense forced seven turnovers in the frame resulting in 13 points and controlled the paint outscoring the Hawks by a 20-to-12 margin.

S&T connected on 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from the floor in the opening half while dishing out 10 assists against just five turnovers. Parks led the Lady Miners with eight points while Bell dropped in six and Andrea Downs and Percival chipped in with four apiece.

Rockhurst on the other hand shot just 36 percent (10-for-28) from the floor, but turned seven offensive rebounds into 10 points which helped keep them in the game.

The Hawks began the second half strong scoring seven of the first nine points to trim S&T's halftime lead to five just over two minutes into the frame. Percival put the Lady Miners back up by eight with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession which sparked a run and eventually pushed their lead back to double digits at 45-33 with 12:45 to play.

Rockhurst refused to go away cutting S&T's lead to four points on a jumper by Valeria Zamora halfway through the stanza. The two sides traded buckets over the next 0:30 before Percival hit her third three of the game to extend the lead back to 50-43 with just over eight minutes remaining.

The lead would stay in the neighborhood of 7-to-9 points over the next three minutes until Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) buried a three and Bell hit a layup extending the lead to 61-49 with 4:30 remaining.

The lead grew to as many as 13 points on a pair of Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) free throws with 1:51 to play before the Hawks made one final push cutting the lead back to single digits on a three by Zamora with 0:58 left. S&T was able to seal the game at the line though to pick up its 14th straight win over Rockhurst.

Both teams shot the ball exceptionally well in the second half as the Hawks were 15-for-33 (45.5 percent) from the field and the Lady Miners shot 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from the floor. The difference in the second half was at the foul line as S&T shot 14 more throws than the Hawks and made 10 more than they did.

Bell led three Lady Miners in double figures with 17 points. Percival finished with 14 while Parks had 10.

Kate Carr and Chrissy Sarcone led Rockhurst with 14 and 13 points respectively.

S&T continues its four-game home stand with a match-up against Missouri-St. Louis on Monday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m.
