(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners were held to its lowest point total in just over three years in its
71-46 loss to the third-ranked University of Indianapolis Greyhounds on Monday evening in Rolla. It was the fewest points it had scored in a game since December 2, 2006 when Indianapolis held the Lady Miners to 47 points which was also in Rolla.
The game was scoreless for nearly the first three minutes when Jessica Canary hit a three to give Indy (17-0, 8-0 GLVC) the early lead. Courtney Kemp answered back with a lay-up for the Lady Miners (10-7, 5-4 GLVC) to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Cayla Keegan answered back with a three of her own to push the margin to four points.
S&T responded by scoring the next eight points getting four from Jazmine Bell and two apiece from Andrea Downs and Hailee Parks to take its only lead of the game at the 13:32 mark.
The Greyhounds ran off the next 10 points over the next four minutes to regain the lead at 16-10. Sarah Fenneman and Hillary Wenning had three points apiece in the run.
Julie Meyer kept the Lady Miners within striking distance with a jumper at the 9:23 mark, before UIndy broke the game open with another long run behind a pair of three's from Canary and Katie Dewey. The lead grew to 28-16 on a lay-up by Samantha Meissel, but Downs answered right back with a lay-up at the 4:23 mark getting it back down to 10 points.
That would be the closest S&T got the rest of the way as the Greyhounds closed the first half scoring eight of the final nine points to head into the break with a 36-19 lead.
They shot 53.8 percent (14-for-26) from the floor in the frame and were 5-of-10 from behind the arc. Canary led all scorers with 10 in the stanza while Meissel finished with seven. UIndy converted 10 Lady Miner turnovers into 13 points and held a slight edge in the paint at 18-to-16.
S&T shot just 37.5 percent (9-for-24) from the floor and were 0-of-4 from downtown. Meyer had five points to lead the Lady Miners. Downs, Kemp and Bell each had four points apiece. The rebounding numbers were close with Indianapolis holding a slim 14-to-13 advantage.
The second didn't start much better for S&T as the 'Hounds opened on a 14-6 run building a 25-point lead just over five minutes in. The lead grew to 62-31 by the 7:57 mark when Dewey hit a jumper on the fast break.
The lead wouldn't get lower than 25 points the rest of the way as the Lady Miners didn't have an answer for UIndy at either end of the floor. The Greyhounds shot 60 percent (15-for-25) from the field in the second half while they held S&T to just 41 percent (11-for-27) shooting.
Indianapolis outrebounded the Lady Miners by a 16-to-11 margin in the second half and outscored them 22-to-14 in the paint.
Canary finished with 12 points and was joined in double figures by Meissel and Dewey with 11 apiece.
Meyer finished with a game-high 15 points leading S&T while Bell finished with 12.
The Lady Miners continue their three-game home stand on Thursday evening when the Lewis University Flyers come to Rolla for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
