(Springfield, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners had its season-high three-game winning streak snapped in a
71-57 loss at Drury on Saturday evening in Springfield, Mo.
The Lady Miners (10-6, 5-3 GLVC) fell behind early 5-0 as Ja'Nell Jones scored Drury's (14-4, 6-1 GLVC) first five points of the contest. Brittany Percival finally put S&T on the board with a three-pointer four minutes into the contest. After a bucket by Katie Pritchard, Jazmine Bell got S&T back within one point on an old-fashioned three-point play.
The two sides traded three-point baskets to keep it a one point ball game before the Panthers got back-to-buckets to build a 15-9 advantage. They eventually stretched that lead to 19-10 before the Lady Miners scored six of the next seven points to climb back within four at the halfway point of the opening frame.
Drury had an answer going on a 12-4 spurt over the next eight points behind Lindsay Ballweg's four points and four others had two apiece. That run gave the Panthers their largest lead of the half at 32-20. S&T was able to cut into the deficit by scoring four of the final five points of the frame to get within nine points at the intermission.
Drury shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the floor in the first half while the Lady Miners were only 10-of-26 (38.5 percent). Each team shot the ball well from behind the three-point line as S&T hit two of its four attempts while the Panthers were 3-for-5 from downtown.
The difference in the opening half was Drury's advantage in the paint as it scored 18 points compared to eight for the Lady Miners. S&T had the advantage on the boards outrebounding the Panthers by an 18-to-15 margin in the stanza.
The Lady Miners had some good scoring opportunities at the start of the second half around the basket but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities. The two sides traded baskets for the first three minutes before a pair of free throws by Caitlin Shouse pushed the lead back to double digits at 39-28.
Courtney Kemp brought S&T back to within eight points with a three-pointer but Melanie Oliver quickly pushed the lead back to double figures with a lay-up. Hailee Parks and Bell kept the Lady Miners within eight points with back-to-back lay-ups before the Panthers got a three from Pritchard and lay-up by Oliver to push the lead back to 13 points.
The Lady Miners began to climb back into the game going on a 15-7 run over the next seven minutes and eventually got to within 55-50 on a pair of free throws by Fareedah Washington.
S&T had an opportunity to get closer after Jones missed a lay-up but couldn't corral the rebound and Ballweg knocked home a three to extend it back to an eight point game.
The Lady Miners had a chance to answer but a missed shot and a turnover led to Pritchard hitting a jumper in the lane and the ensuing free throw to push the lead back to double digits.
S&T wouldn't get closer than 11 the rest of the way as Ballweg buried a three as the buzzer on the shot clock ran down for the final margin.
The Lady Miners had a tough time shooting the ball in the second half as they made only 12-of-34 (35.3 percent) and finished the game shooting 37 percent (22-for-60) from the floor and were 5-of-14 from behind the arc.
Bell had 15 to lead S&T while Percival dropped in 11 and Andrea Downs had eight.
The Panthers shot nearly 50 percent in the second (14-for-29) and finished the game at nearly the same margin (27-for-55) and were 7-of-14 from behind the arc.
Ballweg led four Drury players in double figures with 18 points. Pritchard added 15 while Jones and Oliver had 13 and 12 respectively.
The Lady Miners return to action on Monday evening when they host the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
