KENOSHA, Wis. – Missouri S&T got its men's soccer season underway Friday with its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener, playing to a
1-1 tie at Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Miners managed only one shot in the opening half of play, but the one they did get made it to the back of the net. Senior midfielder
Nick Landon (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) finished off a play set up by
Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) and
Trent Doerner (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) at the 25:53 mark to give S&T a 1-0 lead that it would take to halftime.
S&T spent much of the second half warding off the Rangers, who entered the contest having won all three of its previous contests. Miner goalkeeper
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) turned away five shots during the second half, but with just 4:13 to play in regulation time, Jason Moxley got one past him to tie the contest.
The Miners were outshot 18-6 through the first 90 minutes, but had all four shots in the first overtime period and had four corner kicks through the two extra periods. S&T had a good scoring opportunity midway through the second overtime session off a corner kick, but
Mario Calderon (Mexico City, Mexico/ITESM)'s shot went wide of the net.
UW-Parkside had a 22-12 advantage in shots, but each team had six corner kicks during the afternoon. McNamee finished with seven saves in goal for S&T as it earned a tie for the second straight year on the Rangers' home pitch.
The Miners will return to action Sunday when they face Colorado School of Mines at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.
