KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Miner soccer team suffered some unlucky fate Sunday, as Rockhurst's Joe Huppe ricocheted a shot off the right post and into the net 2:29 into overtime to give the Hawks a
1-0 win over Missouri S&T.
The Miners played on even terms with the Hawks for much of the afternoon, as Rockhurst held a 16-14 advantage in shots (seven apiece on goal) during regulation time.
However, Rockhurst got the goal early in the extra period, as Huppe took a shot from just outside the penalty area that went off the post, but past Miner goalkeeper
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) for the game-winner.
S&T had a couple of good scoring chances in the latter stages of the first half, but had those efforts turned away. The Hawks then received a penalty kick chance in the opening moments of the second half, but McNamee stopped the attempt by Walker Moskop.
Later in the second half, the Hawks had shots that went off the crossbar and goal post as the score remained tied.
McNamee finished with seven saves in goal for the Miners (2-3-1, 2-2-1 GLVC), who will return home for their next three games beginning Friday against undefeated Drury. Game time will be at 7:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field for the game between S&T and the 13th-ranked Panthers.
