Lady Miners come up short at Nebraska-Omaha Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Omaha, Neb.) – The S&T Lady Miners dropped another pair of matches on Saturday at the Nebraska-Omaha Classic losing to the host Mavericks 3-0 (16-25, 18-25 and 21-25) and Cameron University (Okla.) 3-2 (19-25, 21-25, 25-19, 27-25 and 15-17).

In the opener on Saturday, S&T (2-11) got off to bad start in the first set getting only three kills but committed eight errors in 30 chances as Nebraska-Omaha (9-3) took advantage of those mistakes and had 13 kills in the set against only three errors. UN-Omaha led the entire way in the opening set. The Lady Miners held a 3-1 lead early in the second set, it's only lead of the match, but the Mavericks responded with a 9-1 run to take control of the set. After a negative hitting percentage in the opening set, S&T came back and hit a respectable .214 in the second set but had no answer for the Omaha offense as it hit .400 percent in the frame.

The third set saw the Mavericks score the first four points of the set and eventually build a couple of seven point advantages before the Lady Miners came back with a late rally and got it within 23-20 and 24-21 but the Mavericks got a kill from Ellen Thommes to get the victory.

Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) led S&T with seven kills in the match while Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) had six. Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) dug 13 balls of the floor.

In the finale of the tournament against Cameron (9-2), the Lady Miners dug themselves an 0-2, before coming back to win the next two sets to set up the fifth and deciding match. S&T trailed 15-14 in the deciding set before getting a kill by Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) to tie it at 15-15 all. The Aggies though scored the final two points to win the match.

The match was a very competitive one that saw 34 ties and 13 lead changes. The stat line was just as even as the Lady Miners had 68 kills to just 67 for Cameron, but the Aggies had the slight edge outhitting S&T by a .225-to-.199 margin. S&T had 15 more attacks in the match but committed three more attack errors.

Six Lady Miners recorded double figure totals in total attacks led by Meyer with 54. Klump recorded a career-high 19 kills in the contest and was joined in double figures by Meyer with 15 and Lynsey Jorgenson contributed 11. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) and Danielle Kracl (Omaha, Neb./Burke) recorded 27 and 24 set assists respectively while Williams led the way with 19 digs. Meyer added to her double-double total with 15 digs to go along with her kill total.

S&T returns home for a match on Tuesday evening for a non-conference match-up against Central Methodist beginning at 7 p.m.
