(Omaha, Neb.) – The S&T volleyball squad dropped another pair of hard fought five set matches on Friday at the Nebraska-Omaha Classic in Omaha, Neb. The Lady Miners fell to Angelo State
3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 27-25, 22-25 and 14-16) and to Minnesota State-Moorhead
3-2 (25-22, 12-25, 25-23, 15-25 and 9-15).
In the first game on Friday S&T (2-9) dropped the first set to Angelo State (9-2) as the Rambelles outhit the Lady Miners .258-to-.109. S&T rebounded though by taking the next set rallying from an early 3-0 hole with six straight points and never looked. The lead grew to as many as seven points at one point during the set. ASU closed the lead to 21-18 before S&T finished the set off by scoring four of the final six points. Both sides had the same number of kills and errors in the frame but the Rambelles had three more attacks as the Lady Miners outhit them by a slight .290-to.265 margin to even the match. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) had five of her career-high 21 kills during the second set.
The third set was a see-saw affair as it had 12 ties and nine lead changes but S&T was able to overcome a couple of late attack errors and overcame a match getting a pair of kills by Meyer to finish off the set and give the Lady Miners the 2-1 lead. The fourth frame was another close one with only seven ties and three lead changes. It was tight early but the Rambelles broke open a 10-10 tie with an 8-2 run to build its largest lead of the set at 18-12. The lead would stay around the six point margin until S&T ran off four straight points with ASU at set point to get within 24-22. The Rambelles won the set however on a kill by Claire Chomout to set up the fifth and deciding set.
The fifth set was another exciting one with 10 ties and four lead changes. The two sides traded the first 18 points and were tied 9 all. The Lady Miners got a pair of kills from Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) to take an 11-9 advantage before Angelo stormed back to tie it up at 11. The two sides again began trading points and were tied at 14 all but S&T fell short dropping the final two points and the match.
Meyer led all players with her 21 kills. Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) and Klump joined in her double figures with 14 and 11 kills respectively. Danielle Kracl (Omaha, Neb./Burke) and Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) recorded match-highs in set assists with 50 and digs 23.
In the second match on Friday between S&T took the opening set against the Dragons of Minnesota State-Moorhead (9-2), outhitting them .211-to-.150. The set was tied at 10 all before the Lady Miners went on a 5-2 surge to take the lead. The Dragons responded tying the match up at 20 and then took the lead on the next point. S&T answered right back as Klump recorded three kills and had a pair of assisted blocks along with Bekebrede and Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) to score five of the final six points taking the set.
The second set was all MSUM as it led from start to finish hitting .423 percent with 13 kills against only two errors in 26 attacks. The Dragons never trailed in the set scoring the first five points before building their lead to as many as 13 on four different occasions.
The third set saw 12 ties and three lead changes as S&T was able to pull away late from an 18 all tie with a 4-1 run. Moorhead came back though to things at 22, but the Lady Miners were able to push through scoring three of the final four points to take a 2-1 lead. The Dragons got off to another fast start in set four getting out to an early 10 point lead and never looking back hitting 50 percent in the frame to square the match at 2-2. MSUM and S&T were tied at 1-1 in the fifth set before the Dragons went on a 7-1 run to take control of the set and held on as the Lady Miners tried to make a late surge, but it was too little to late as Moorhead won 15-9.
Klump led the Lady Miners with 13 kills in the match. Meyer narrowly missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. Kracl and Costello reached double figures in set assists with 21 and 14 respectively while Williams had 24 digs.
S&T will be back in action tomorrow at the Nebraska-Omaha Classic taking on the host Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha at 11:45 a.m. and Cameron University (Okla.) at 5:30 p.m.
