3/7/2009 10:26:24 PM

Box Score (Quincy, Ill.) - A seven minute first half scoreless drought and subsequent 13-0 run by Quincy during that stretch ended up being the deciding factor in Missouri S&T's 69-57 loss in the GLVC semifinals on Saturday evening at the QU Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Ill.

The Hawks (26-3) opened the game strong scoring the first seven points of the contest and would not look back. Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) scored the first four points for the Lady Miners to get them back within three but QU had the answer pushing the margin back to seven not long after. It's defense gave the Lady Miners (16-13) fits all night long as it forced them into tough shots throughout the frame.

S&T regrouped and eventually cut the lead to 17-16 on a lay-up by Kemp with exactly 12 minutes to play in the stanza. Quincy began its run getting a jumper from Jessica Keller then hit back-to-back three's from Alex Rosnowski to extend the lead to 25-16 with less than 10 minutes to play. Keller finished off the run by scoring three of the final five points.

The Lady Miners cut the lead down to 30-20 getting back-to-back lay-ups from Katie McElrath (Owasso, Okla./Owasso) and Tamara McCaskill with under five minutes to go. Keller again had the answer hitting another jumper to extend the lead back to 12. S&T had a chance to cut the lead to under 10 when McCaskill appeared to hit a driving lay-up but instead was called for an offensive foul then the Hawks proceeded to score the final three points of the half to head into the break with a 15 point advantage.

The Lady Miners shot only 28 percent (7-for-25) in the frame and turned it over 13 times while Quincy shot 15-of-38 (40 percent) and outrebounded S&T by a 23-19 margin including 10-5 on the offensive end. The Hawks were able to turn that advantage into 10 second chance points and outscored the Lady Miners 15-8 in points off turnovers.

S&T was able to get the lead down to under nine by the 13:44 mark of the second half but once again Quincy had an answer scoring seven of the next 10 points to extend the lead back to 13. That lead grew to 16 by the 8:18 mark before eventually getting it to its largest of the night at 64-46 with less than five to play.

The Lady Miners tried to fight back scoring eight straight points to cut the lead to 10 on a lay-up by McCaskill with 2:22 to go. After a missed jumper the Hawks were able to all but seal the game on fast break lay-in by Keller with 1:50 to play. Kylee Grant (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods)'s three with 1:33 to go cut the lead to nine but a jumper by Whintae Irby off another second chance pushed the lead back to 11 with 1:06 left to seal the deal.

S&T shot the ball a lot better in the second half connecting on nearly 50 percent of its attempts (15-for-31) but were only 2-of-7 from downtown and ended up trading baskets with the Hawks. QU shot 13-for-30 (43 percent) from the floor in the second stanza.

McCaskill led three players in double figures with 16 points, 12 in the second half, Jazmine Bell (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) dropped in 15 while Kemp had 11. McCaskill finished her Lady Miner career with 1,525 points.

Courtney Shuman led all scorers with 18 points. Keller finished with 17 while Janette Burgin had 10.

The Lady Miners finished their 2008-09 season with a 16-13 record and their second straight appearance in the GLVC semifinals.
