Missed chances were the story of the day for the Missouri S&T baseball team, as it dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Indianapolis at the S&T Baseball Field.
The Greyhounds took game one
6-0, then completed the sweep by staving off a late rally by the Miners to take a
6-3 decision in the nightcap.
S&T had good scoring opportunities in each of the first two innings, but came away with no runs after getting two runners on base on both occasions. In the first, the Miners had runners on second and third with one out, then had runners on first and third with one out in the second.
Meanwhile, the Greyhounds got on the scoreboard in the second on Scott Mourey's RBI double, then broke the game open with a three-run fifth that included two unearned runs.
Indianapolis extended its lead to 2-0 on an RBI single by Justin Russell, then an error on a pickoff attempt allowed another run to score. Another error later in the inning gave UIndy its third run in the fifth.
The Greyhounds tacked on two more runs in the seventh, then let Cory White complete his seven-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.
The Miners got two hits from
Thomas McCormick (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) in game one.
Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower), who struck out five over the first five innings, took the loss on the hill.
Indianapolis jumped out on top in game two on a two-out RBI double by Matt Murphy in the first, but the Miners answered right back against starter Cory Rupert.
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) led off the inning with a hit and came around to score on McCormick's triple into the corner in right.
However, McCormick was stranded after a pop out and a ground out, then the Greyhounds took the lead two innings later on Ben Sondergoth's two-out RBI single.
UIndy extended its lead with two runs in the fourth and two more in the eighth before the Miners mounted a rally in the bottom half of the eighth.
Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) drove in a pair with a double into the gap, but Greyhound reliever David Early was able to get UIndy out of the inning and pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn a save.
Morrison and
Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) had two hits apiece in the nightcap for S&T, who dropped to 6-13 on the season. Freshman Zach Gronek took the loss.
The Miners and Greyhounds will wrap up their weekend series Sunday with a single game at noon.
